  1. They look like what are still on the Newbury town lock, although smaller and padlocked down, out of use. So are they the original, earlier method of emptying and filling a lock? Before winding paddles up and down?
  2. I thought hired boat were not permitted to navigate from 8 at night until 8 in the morning? I guessed company policy and reasons of insurance. But a privately owned boat can navigate around the clock. ?
  3. Spot on!! Sorted it on the towpath. Glenn. Great image. Glenn
  4. Right, I've finally done it. Route is planned! Sat in pub with map and pencil. It's quite complex, working it out. More so, if your not familiar with the junction names and places. I can now relax and enjoy the sights for a week. Glenn.
  5. Sounds good to me! Early morning starts are good, 5 or 6 am, on the sunny mornings, lovely. By 12pm I've then put in enough hours to deserve stopping for early doors. I'm lucky I have time. I understand a hirer may want to cover as much as possible. I'd set shorter distances, as someone suggested, then your not disappointed if you get there, and it's a bonus if you get further. Be prepared to chuck a plan out the window too. A good question, and it's interesting to hear the patterns/habits of others.
  6. Ha, of course. Is Dudley the yam yam? Where are the yow yows ? Wolverhampton?
  7. I followed the link given by Lonewolf. Read the minutes. Maritime law, does that still mean I can still have my daily pint of grog? But more interesting, through that link,I discovered Scribd, and what you've put on there. I've been flicking through pages of the cross examination and then the judgement of Moore v British waterways this afternoon. It's worth reading. There's reference to Illegal bailiffs, dodgy records, and threats. Glenn
  8. Do you find the accent returns when your back in the area?
  9. Is a propmate a small child? Like a Victorian sweep. But does props? Glenn
  10. Is this problem more susceptible to an engine that sits idle?
  11. On the one hand I want all to know how good Birmingham is, but on the other, I think... well maybe.... It's wise they don't all know.
  12. I wonder if they were same kids that tried to gob at me? They were both poor gobbers. More amusing than anything else.
  13. Published on the Internet? Do you have a link. Glenn
  14. When you say you moved, did you up and vacate a permanent/residential mooring? Or were you passing through and moved on?
  15. All the comments and advice are spot on. Brum is a good place to be. Much safer than other people make out. Lots of places have security with gate entrances and cameras. Just Keep off the k&a. !! Glenn
  16. Put some quick burning plastic trays/wrappers in your stove. Piss them off proper. Smokeless fuel smokes like a bastard till its burning proper.
  17. I'm back in Brum! Back in civilisation. I Love it! I can understand what people are saying. A week early for the event. But I'll occupy myself. Cracking pubs And a good art gallery Oh and some lovely, uplifting poetry on the lock gates. Glenn
  18. That's Chris! Get chatting with him and he'll tell you a lot about the history of the canal. I met him on my way west last October and again in April heading east. Was it the turf lock? (By monkey marsh?) Glenn
  19. I did suggest this when I went to the meeting at Hatton yesterday. Caroline Killeavy (Head of Community Engagement) made a note of it. She also suggested getting in touch locally with C&RT regards recommending any lock ( or swing bridge ) that would benefit from having a lock keeper. Glenn
  20. Yes scribbled and I don't understand my scribblings. I was moored up by you the last couple of nights. Sent a PM
  21. I thought it was just me being new to this, finding it hard to sort out a route. I've a spread sheet which is a paper version, Bits of tracing paper and a scribbled on map Looking forward to it!
  22. The one above the pub, no. But the swing bridge hole is a 70fter? Just glad I'm off the K&A. All those problems.
