  1. Hmmm - do I detect a certain reluctance of our intrepid boaters to take this challenge seriously? Brian
  2. Same here. No problems. Brian
  3. Would anyone consider trying a Channel crossing on their narrowboat? Has it been done before? What extra precautions would be needed (besides a large dose of insanity). Brian

  6. Thanks for posting your "manifesto" on this forum, Andy. A good document of substance and well presented. I wish you well in the forthcoming election. Brian
  7. Bob, I have been one of those to slag you off recently and if that has caused you distress, I do apologise. Most of what you say I actually agree with, but sometimes its the way you say it that has got up my nose, and I have probably overreacted. In contrast, your post above is presented with humility, and I appreciate that. I do think that quality makes your points far more effectively. So, again, I am sorry if I have gone OTT a bit and I look forward to more of your posts in the future. Brian
  8. Even if the whiskey doesn't kill 'em, they'll be so pissed they'll forget to poison you!! Brian
  9. Well. its certainly "other"landish at least. I have'nt a clue what its supposed to say! By the way (or should that be BTW?) I like your use of the word "argot". That was a new one on me - had to look it up. Good word, that! I shall look out for a chance to use it myself. Might get banned for going so far off topic, but really just using up time until the OP does us the courtesy of letting us know the result of all the help she has requested. Brian
  10. ALIEN ALERT!!!!!!!!! Brian
  11. The contradiction is the poster's condemnation Why do you want to impose your value system on someone else? With his final sentence, which does precisely that It is an idiom used by the young. Get used to it. So what is condemned at the start, is practised at the end. Brian
  12. See any contradiction????? Brian
  13. I wish you well in the forthcoming election. However I am concerned by your statement that electors should find out about you from your blog. It may not be your intention, but that comes over to me as you trying to transfer responsibility from yourself to the electors. It really is up to you to promote your bid, not for us to be made to ferret it out. May only be a small point, but smacks of an "attitude" that does not inspire confidence in your future dealings with CaRT or the boating community. Sorry to be negative, but I hope you will take it in the spirit of openess and honesty with which it is offered. I do genuinely wish you a successful campaign. Brian
  14. I find the arrogance of this post quite staggering. I hope all candidates will ignore it. 1. Any proposals the candidates may have will be for the Council, not self-appointed interrogators on an open forum. The candidates' present role is to gather support for their abilities and commitment to serve boaters on that Council. 2. Why should he? Its irrelevant to the process of getting elected to the Council. If you really want to know, why don't you take the trouble to find out for yourself? This sounds more like a frustrated school-master's mischief-making question. 3. More irrelevance. Who are you to set yourself up as judge of what is of most benefit to me or other boaters? 4. David Schweitzer has already answered this demand. It seems to me that this post inhabits the arid world of pseudo-intelligence where everything is theory, and reality is nothing. Its the atmosphere that typifies politicians and why they too are so utterly sterile in dealing with the real world. Brian
  15. Have patience! Voting's not til Feb/March. All will become clear - we hope! Brian
  16. Lovely! Looking forward to seeing you chugging up and down the K&A. Best wishes Brian
  17. Presumably you realiise it will be sulphuric acid you will be removing, not the pure water you put in! I guess you would use the hydrometer to suck the excess out. Brian
  18. Can you tell your bloody pigeons to stop crapping on my boat! brian
  19. Thanks Alan. You are quite right and wise to add this fuller personal "manifesto" which I find very helpful. It gives me sufficient detail to make an informed choice when the election takes place in a few weeks time. If there are any other independent candidates from this forum, I hope they will follow your lead. As a relative newbie, others will remain just "names" to me, unless they can provide a similar outline. At present, Alan, you are the only one I have enough information to vote for. Good luck. Brian
  20. I think we've known that since Matty's post No.7 a coupleof hours ago. Brian
  21. Same here. Had to abandon it yesterday evening. Noticed there were no posts timed between about 6.30pm and 7.30 pm. Back to normal this morning though. Brian
  22. I have often suspected that the greatest nummber of replies on this forum tend to come from liveaboards and c/cruisers. Nothing wrong with that of course, but in this case it might lead the OP to believe the market in general is similarly weighted. That could be a big danger in mis-assessing the open market for his boat. Brian

  24. Well, I guess you must have more time available than I usually have. Brian. As yet, I haven't had any problem firing up the heater, even after leaving it for several weeks (Its an Alde). The problem with using the cooker to heat is that with my layout, it will only heat the front end of the boat, and it produces loads of condensation. Maybe works better on different layouts? Brian
  25. Personally I would not buy a boat without some sort of central heating. As a leisure boater I have to leave my boat several weeks a time, and when I can get back to it a few times during the winter, I do want to be able to just switch the heating on to get the chill off the air. I've usually got lots of little jobs to do, and don't want to be faffing around with logs, coal, paper etc to get a fire going, and then having to clean it all out again a few hours later. It could be very different for a liveaboard though, who is generally always there to maintain a decent fire permanently. So maybe not too much of a problem selling without c/h, but might rreduce your market somewhat. Anyway, best of luck with your plans. Brian
