  1. Hello The fenders fitted to my new boat attach below the gunnel and I am constantly having to lift them at narrow locks, and then they are liable to fall back in the water. If fact they probably will not last the season, looking at the lines attached to them. I have seen a few boats moored up using a detachable contraption that looks a bit like a G clamp and hooks on to the ridge along the roof. On these you hang your fender and line. Looked at Midland's site and trawled other internet sites and can find nothing. I have seen some that look home-made, and some more professional. If I still lived at home and had access to a garage I would fabricate one and make several copies, but that's a bit difficult on-board without power tools. I have spoken to two boaters - one who thought they were great - the other thought they were a waste of time. Your comments please and if anybody knows where I can source them I would be obliged. 2. We are currently stuck above The Trent at Trent Lock on the Erewash and the word locally is that the river will rise round here even higher this weekend, when the region is expecting some very heavy showers on Sunday. I think most of the Midlands, north of here, empties into the Trent and Derwent upstream. We have just moved on to a brand new boat and are keen to get on the T&M, but Sawley flood lock is closed until further notice, as is Cranfleet so it's no-go to Nottingham. If you coming this way from the west I wouldn't think you would get much further than Shardlow (mind you, there are worse places to be stuck in). It looks like we will be here until Tuesday or Wednesday at least. Roger
  3. Just seen advertised in "Canal Boat", the next 20% off "Freaky Friday" at Midland Chandlers is on Friday 16 March. Enjoy... I will The Jolly Roger
  4. Hello folks We will be moving on to our first new boat at the end of March, so thought I would start thinking about getting licensed-up. Going for a Gold license as we will be cruising the Thames in September and I am aware that BW licenses go from Jan-December. However, I have just been told by Katy at BW in Leeds, that even though I am starting my licence four months into the calendar year, I still have to pay for a full year, losing nearly £300. She had to ask somebody else for this information, which, too me seems wrong, but I dare say somebody out there has experienced a similar scenario and can comment. Can you imagine it if you bought a new boat in September, wanted to licence it, and were told that you would have to pay for a full year when you only have three months cruising time left. 5. Wow. What a lot of good ideas. Thanks a lot. Keep them coming. Looks like I will have to buy a bigger first aid box Jolly Roger
  6. I move on to my first narrowboat in March and my wife and I have started our provisioning list. One of the items on the list is a well-stocked first aid box and while I was in Boots this morning I bought the usual waterproof plasters, antiseptic creams etc. Are there an unusual items you experienced boaters have found to be essential in a waterways first aid box that I may not have thought of. 7. Thanks for your responses folks. When you say FM Transmitters, the only ones I know of are bits of kit such as the itrip which you need to keep close to your car stereo to get a good signal. Do you know of one that could connect to a car stereo and send to a remote radio. Roger
  8. Hello folks Currently addressing a sound system for new semi-trad currently being built. The most economic and sensible solution to listening to music seems to be via a 12v car stereo. Just checked Halfords website and they have a sale on of Sony units which seem to have all the bells and whistles one could want, enabling connection of hard drives and mp3 players. Some at the higher end have Bluetooth which is interesting to me, as I’d like to send a signal from the unit in the saloon to a bluetooth speaker in the cockpit from time to time. However, I know the Bluetooth signal is limited and guess it will not like being enclosed in steel. Anybody had any experience of Bluetooth on boats and of Bluetooth speakers generally folks? Will be mounting two 6.5” speakers in saloon ceiling (Mrs Jolly Roger is mightily against a sub woofer) and I think that the low frequencies could be quite annoying for other craft. Got any recommendations re co-axial vs full range speakers? I am not an audiophile, but want my tunes to sound as decent as possible. Roger
  9. Tonyl Thanks for the photo. Impressed Mrs Jolly Roger. Roger
  10. Been considering the Mi Fi option now for a while, and on a recent visit to the 3 shop, the assistant told me this new one (E586) was iminent and to wait for it, as it was a whole lot faster than the previous model, which I know, a few forum members had gone for. Looks like it might be worth a go, as my contract with o2 is up in December. Anybody out there got the new one working yet? Roger
  11. Hi Folks Only my second posting so apologies if I have posted this in the wrong area. We are currently having our first boat built and would like to buy British wherever possible. We have been looking at solid fuel stoves and my missus likes the look of the corner-mounted Bubble. It seems that Bubble make more oil-fuelled stoves than solid fuel, so my question to you all is if you have a solid fuel Bubble, what is your opinion of it. We'll probably put an ecofan on top (Bet that's Chinese). Also, can anybody tell me how I get pictures on to the site. I am asked for a URL. Normally you are asked to Browse for pix. Many thanks Roger thecatswhiskersnb.blogspot.com
  12. Hello Folks We are, at present, having our first boat fitted out at Kingfisher Narrowboats at Trent Lock, so I figured it time I finally joined the forum, having trawled through it enough times, on our way to this point. After around 20 years of hiring, this will be our first boat, and our home once I retire at Christmas. She's a 62ft Semi Trad, to be called "The Cat's Whiskers". Painting is well underway, the windows and mushroom vents are in, and the engine (Beta 42) gets dropped in next week. After that the spray foam man cometh. The shell was fabricated at Narrowboats of Staffordshire. Would appreciate hearing from any any forum members going through a similar process. with their first boat. It seems part excitiement, part terror and part exhilaration. Roger
