Why take on the identity of a boat that is still around? What's the point?

I was trying to be very kind...I feel sorry as I have seen several Yarwood's copies and they are quite poor. One person told me it was their dream to have a Yarwood copy and what they got, well, it's not that great as if built by someone who had been told what they looked like but never seen one in the flesh. In fact I have a natural history book about 200 years old and some of the animals illustrated are hilarious.

Duke was a big GU boat and this Duke is not the Duke No 38. So what is it?

I've always called it a top mast but when looking it up I found middle mast and as I get older I've come to realise that I know less and less about canal boats and boating.

Ooooh, I hadn't thought of light blue, I assume you are thinking of Grand Union light blue. Red oxide was my thought initially as it would make sense to me. The painted surface would wear with the mast being raised and dropped and could be "touched up" with the red oxide whenever needed. Has the bit in question got a name?

The birchwood 33 gt boat is too wide for the canals you need to travel on for your story (Llangollen,Shropshire Union Canal and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal).

Just a thought, what colour should the bit that goes into the box mast (the bit with the looby) be on a GU boat painted in the 2 tone blue scheme. Most I have seen are red but would it have red in 1935/6 when the boats were new as no other bit of a GU boat was red other then the fleet number. I wonder if this is a FMC thing that is spreading to all historic boats? Also what is that bit with the lobby called? Top mast, middle mast? Cheers.

Yeah, private, public, academies and some state schools do have their own holiday dates but at the moment most Lancashire and Cumbrian schools are still at school.

It's not school holidays in Lancashire for the next week or so. 24th July is the start of the school hols though some will start on the Friday before.

Older GU boats were iron and wood then they move on to steel and wood and the all steel. Oh, and some were all wood.

The entrance to lock 12 has a bulge in the wall and we got proper stuck. We were running empty so a loaded GU boat might very well still be able to get through but...

Using numerous founts was not uncommon on fly posters of old. I think it gives it a more C19 feel rather than C21 which is fitting for the FMC theme. There are about three or four founts on an FMC cabin side!

I think that you are dead right. The thing is this could have a real negative effect on canal side businesses as less passing traffic and therefore less footfall. One business owner was talking about closing for the summer and having an extended holiday.

Things really change in 1976 re closing gates a paddles etc. That was when I was first aware of signs about saving water and close gates etc.
