  1. Came through a bridge hole on the Llangollen to find this
  2. Sorry Richard, link I posted seems to be an old one.
  3. http://www.middlewichguardian.co.uk/news/11276832.BREAKING__Missing_person_search_on_sunken_canal_boat/ Numty edit ;- just noticed link is dated 13 june, doh
  4. Tree is right, it was Trevor I meant, and my Nicholsons show it as a 70' winding hole in the basin. Quite a lot of boats used it to wind in while we were there so I assumed it is a recognised winding point. Do you know different? Btw very impressed by your boats shape shifting abilities, you were moored directly in front of as at the end of the arm when we went to bed. When we got up next morning it had morphed into a 50+ foot hireboat,
  5. Had similar on the Llangollen last week. we overnighted right at the end of the ellesmere basin and reversed back to the turning point / entrance to find a viking hire moored on the entrance to the other arm where the trip boat / cafe is. Managed to get round as boat is 56ft but it took about a 15 point turn, bit of a pain but no big issue, as we completed the turn someone from Jones the Boats appeared and gave the hire boat some "constructive advice" Later on we moored at the bottom of Grindley Brook just after the lock landing then 2 Anglo Welsh boats moored overnight on the lock bollards, loads of room in front. Not having a go at hire boats crews here but you have to wonder what the hire companies are telling them or what (if any) research the crews do before the trip.
  6. Program running now, all about boat families in Droitwich, Researching the Harris & Harrisons history. Might be of interest to some.
  7. Not yet, according to their website and Facebook it won't be long, "a matter of weeks" Last time we were up that way ( about 5 years ago) we enjoyed the meal so much that we stopped on the way back again. New owners and a refurb now so no idea what it will be like now. We will be on the llangollen next week and would have liked to try it out again. I seem to remember a good farm shop between whitchurch and trevor (near a lock?) is it still open?

  14. Help please guys, We are due to leave the boat tomorrow and the bilge pump has stopped working on automatic, works ok on manual and when float is operated by hand which is no good if no ones onboard. We are near kingswood junction, GU / Stratford canal close to lapworth, are there any chandlers nearby where I can get a new pump, will have car tomorrow so travel not an issue. Thanks
  15. Had something similar in Banbury last year, we were going down and lock was six inches off being full, no other boat in sight so the Mrs topped up the lock and opened the gate, at this point Mr angry appeared at started a right old rant at my missus oblivious to me and the boat approaching. He got it back with both barrels and scuttled off with his tail between his legs. I'm normally pretty placid and would have just spoken to the guy but my wife was recovering from a long term illness and the boat was supposed to be chill out time for her, the last thing she needed was a jumped up little t*ss*r shouting the odds at her.
  16. Our shoreline manual says - "5 flashes are thermal cut out of electronic unit, if the refrigeration system has been too heavily loaded or the ambient is too high, the electronic unit will run too hot"
  17. Yup, you can get done even on private land if there is public access and you just have to be "in charge of the vehicle" My kids used to get the right hump when I sent them out to the car to get my jacket or a cd because I'd had a drink, its just not worth the risk. Story from a guy on a course who had been banned for drink driving....... He alleged that his girlfriend was driving as he was drunk, an argument developed on the way home and got more heated as they parked up. A neighbour heard the commotion and called the police who arrived to find him in the driving seat but he claimed he had only sat in it after they stopped and didn't even have the keys. To prove his point he pressed the start button on the car and it roared into life because the girlfriend was close to the car with the keys in her handbag, ooops - automatic drunk in charge - 12 month ban
  18. I work in the driver rehab area, one of the courses being related to drink drive convictions. I did ask a fairly senior traffic officer about this point and his take was that if you were in the living area of the van then no problem but if drunk in the drivers position then that might be viewed differently especially if parked on a public road. No real issue if off road, on a campsite for example.
