Well excuse my stupidity, I was looking to bring it down to the L and L, DOH,oh well,so have to keep on looking.Seems a little less choice up north, to be able to see b4 u buy. When you buy a boat off a independant not through a broker, how do you know its there boat??or am i just being paranoid, what do i need to know b4 handing over a few k.

To add to other answers, get a pearsons guide b4 you go,I couldnt get one from the boat yard last year when i took that trip, they are great for planning, and as already mentioned ring the boat yard on the day or the day b4 and you may be able to pick the boat up earlier, but a good stop as previously mentioned an hour or so after leaving the boat yard, two nice pubs serving food, one overlooking the cut, just be prepared to walk the plank if better moorings are gone right after the lock. Its a nice trip and easy I went to Bristol and back and did it drunk without a problem..
  7. I think thats a good reply, you must of bought a 'right one' for him to be happy to do this, i would think any engine/ heating foibles would be of interest, and if he has kept his boat up to scratch,do what he has done before regarding checks /maintenance,as said beers always talk..
  8. You do have a choice, dont buy what you may not want, the toilet is an important issue, i would only get a pump out, not right or wrong, but you need to get whats right for you on most points, and i think thats an important issue.
  9. If ccing must be a nice time to travel, but anyone ever gambled and lost regarding getting stuck somewhere in the ice,can definately see that happening to me in the future..

    boat layout

Mmm I respect all replies and a couple have made me think, although, stern ,with cruiser stye, saloon, then small toilet to the side,b4 kitchen, corriddoor ,with main shower toilet, bedroom at bow. One of the reasons is she cant see out of the front if its cold and inside at the front, only had this style recently on last hire boat and it seemed to suit best out of all other configurations used thus far, I understand that compromise is necessary, but your thoughts as experienced boaters live aboards is priceless, as someone mentioned about the engine the being by the living area is something i never noticed, so will think about that in if it could effct me.I do look appollo duck most weeks to see whats going for s/h and new builds to see ideas, ultimately i will , if all goes well, travel the country for ten yrs then retire again onto a wide beam, and get some slippers and a pipe.Does anyone think the placement of a chimney is a consideration for going through tunnels..

    boat layout

Hi, thanks but I dont find the L shape comfortable, so would never have that, and I think two toilets is always better, have been on a lot of hire boats and a small wc in a sixty foot works well, the L shape i can see for space but doesnt work for me, too straight and upright. The bespoke settee is adaptable comfort..

    cruiser

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you, so looking at around 1.5 k a yr,in those circumstances, I would only be looking at buying one for around 5k or cheaper then selling it in three yrs when i retire to cc on a narrow boat.Great thanks again.

    boat layout

What is the best lay out of a narrowboat..I want reverse layout but with living area at the back then toilet /shower,then kitchen, then bedroom, plus an extra toilet at bow.Living area should not have an L seatig area but leather comfortable bespoke settee /pullout bed.The boat should be 60ft long, and either new or within two yrs old when I buy it.The inverter should be at least 2.5 kw for ccing for at least 7 months a yr.Anyone think differently and why ..??

    cruiser

Hi, Without asking how long is a piece of string, I am looking at buying a narrowboat in two and a half years, got all my ideas about that and what i want and costs etc, but in the mean time through ppi i may have a few k to buy a little cruiser, just for w/e's and occasional trip out staying the night in b and b's on the way, if i get one to suit me on that basis , without a trailer ,can you do it cheaply,or am i looking at the costs of a narrowboat , licence, mooring fees[somewhere safe'ish. It would be somewhere along the L and L.]I know its a lazy question, just dont want to go into it that deep as its just an idea off the narrowboat which im being an anorak in planning, any ideas would be welcome.],any ball park figures would be of help thanks
  15. Do You find it thourougly absorbing and right up your alley
  16. Cheers, realise its not an exact question, just a rough idea, Just I thought the boat hire price was a bit steep as I was quite conservative in my trip. But as I said I did use it in idle for quite a time, just in case for coffee machines toaster hair straighteners etc
  17. Cheers,I was running it on idle in the mornings, so that would probably account for it, and probably wouldnt be so lavish when owning my own. Gives me an idea of budgeting.
  18. How much does it cost in diesel if cruising for about 30 hrs a week.I recently hired and probably cruised aroung 35 hrs and they charged me £85 .Just wondering for the future when ccing.

Bath to Bristol from Hilperton2012 Sept 138 by Timore3, on Flickr Bath to Bristol from Hilperton2012 Sept 135 by Timore3, on Flickr Bath to Bristol from Hilperton2012 Sept 137 by Timore3, on Flickr Had a great w/e in Brum, not been b4,and found gas st basin great.very pretty and well worth the visit. The trip boat just took you in a circular route for an hour, all I'm remarking on is what I saw,and after leaving the basin area, it was all ugly, couldnt wait for the trip to end, maybe a historical commentary would of made it interesting, but as a pleasant on the eye experience it was'nt.It put me personally off wanting to travel in by boat, and along with the apparent lack of mooring for 24 to 48hr stays in a nice area,I would prefer to go other places. The basin was the only nice place I could see,and a lot of the buildings are carbuncles, badly planned, the traffic through the centre is a night mare.Enjoyed it once but wouldnt go again. We stayed in the top floor of the Radisson so had good views of the panorama, but just my opinion.

Thanks for all answers, went to the worcester for coffee and cake after walking through the shopping centre and had a few pints at the junction, then got a trip boat out and back for an hour, around the basin is picturesque and a credit to the community'but the surrounding area leading in is very very bad and underfunded'what a pity. The infrastructure remains good, of the canal'but the surrounding area is ugly and put me off thinking of boating here to what is a lovely basin area.
