  1. So we went to the IWA only about 40 miles all round, on the way back the water disappeared out of the water box (i will try to explain later) and the engine temperature went up to 100 degrees, we put some water in and the engine temp went back down to its normal 70 degrees. So when we stopped i investigated, i could hear a steady drip drip. One of the jubilee clips had been sheared through by a metal bit of the cooling system (which i am presuming should be attached to the engine block but isn't). I managed to bodge a repair for this using a cable tie. Now that was water tight but i could still hear dripping, i noticed one pipe was cracked and leaking and another one (which was up tight against the engine block) is all crumbling. The whole system seems to be rotten, I will try and take some pics and post them here as it's very difficult to explain it!
  2. Well me and the missus and a friend took the boat. We were a mile from the bridge that lead into the festival entrance - not good for two women with plantar facitus. Also having to book your departure when you get there - stupid and pointless. Having a heated debate with the person booking the departure about which way we were facing and "No i can't reverse over half a mile through buttied up boats" and her telling me i'd have to book through the locks 3 times due to me having to go to barton marina to turn around. The real ale tent was a disappointment - the last time we went in 2009 there was an A4 double sided list of ales - this time about 8 from the titanic brewery and 8 from another brewery and only 2 ciders. The food outlets closing in the night time entertainment was unforgivable. The show seemed to be about half the size of the last time we went, we'd seen everything in the half day on friday. The bands were good but it was the same few bands day in and out, and with the exception of lonesome george it was all pretty much folk/traditional music - which is ok in moderation in my opinion. I was disappointed with the main arena entertainment - the highlights being the firemen putting out a chip pan fire with water and the stunt bmx/mountain bike riders. The stands were good and i spent quite a bit of money and got a lot of info on other things i intend to spend money on in the future. All in all disappointing, but had lots of fun walking a mile when squiffy very late at night.
  3. It made me think about getting involved more, maybe the derby canal as thats the nearest to me. Also i'm sure one of the people being interviewed was the guy off the canaltime training video.
  4. Well a lesbian acquaintance of mine went on a night out to canal street in manchester, and got very upset after some gay fellar walked past her and her friends commenting "ooo, can anyone smell fish?" There does seem to be some antagonism between gay men and lesbians. I would like to point out that i'm not territorial and don't have any antagonism to any blokes gay or straight oh and i definitely don't go round slapping people, I can't vouch for the other half though Lol!
  5. Ah I see, so if that's been bent upwards somehow, then it'll be trapping the rudder making it stiff. And if the rudder is out of the cup would it just be sitting on the skeg then? Or flapping about around the side of it maybe? which would mean it was being pulled down by gravity making it stiff? I am learning things and it didn't make my head hurt, this is good. Thanks all

  7. As someone who grew up on the banks of the Mersey - Have you seen the size of them boats!!!! I wouldn't attempt it in a narrowboat - it's hairy enough on the "ferry 'cross the mersey" lol
  8. I always thought (from discussions on other forums) that Hebden Bridge was the home of the Northern lesbian, I've never visited, so cannot comment on the state of any boats, but i've always liked a bit of diversity (not the dance troupe).
  9. ok i don't know what cups or skegs are... (goes off to google it) I have so much to learn. There is no grease nipple though. It has been like that since i can remember. The boat's being taken out of the water later this year for blacking so i'll probably have a look and do something about it then and just put up with it for now.

  11. So yeah I'm going to the IWA festival next week and my tiller is very stiff and moves in jerks rather than a smooth movement. So apart from dousing it in WD40 (which is my prefered method so far) Is there anything i can do to free it up or is there any common problems that could be causing this? Thanks all
  12. Now that would be telling lol!
  13. Erm i called it ten four rd as i like trucks and convoy and the missus likes ducks! Thanks for the info so far. Does anyone know anything about the builder? Ta in advance
  14. My lovely boat has very little in the way of original documentation, so i'm seeing if any of you can help me out with any information. As far as i've been told she was built in 1999, and her insides were rejigged in 2009, so i'm assuming her BW number 519199 is from the refit and not her original number? On one scrap of paper the builder was listed as stilton and belairs, which when i googled that leads me to believe that it was probably built by floating homes in peterborough? Does anyone have any info on that builder as i'm thinking that due to lack of web presence that they no longer build boats? Her last name was Yamas and before that it appears to have been Silver Sky. Any info would be appreciated.
  15. When i bought this boat i rang BW to change the details of the licence. They told me - "Just let us know when you want to renew it" Very useful.
  16. The only bit of advice i would give you is - I fell in love with a lot of boats online, but almost all of them, when i actually saw them, I did not like, descriptions and photo's can in no way beat going to see a boat. Also i've dismissed boats i've seen online, but having seen them in the flesh, they're a lot better. (for example i never wanted a cruiser stern - guess what my boats got )
  17. You can get a grade 1 mooring at sawley marina, there are lots of live aboards including families with kids. They also do have a few official residential moorings, not sure if they've got any to spare but i guess you could ring em they're quite candid!

    Dogs

well i'm living in a marina and apparently you have to keep your dog on a lead when it's not on your boat. I have a big collie/german shepherd cross and i am constantly amazed by the amount of people who let their dogs run round willy nilly barking at other dogs, mine has been snapped at on a number of occasions and i have to hold my dog up while people run round trying to gather their dogs up. It is a bug bear of mine, i hate to generalise but most of the dogs tend to be little yappy things and often in packs of 2 or more. My dog is not perfect, which is why he stays on his lead, he doesn't show any interest in wildfowl though!
  19. This is an interesting topic. I wield the windlass and my other (female) half does the boat work, to be honest the 1st time we went on a boat I was petrified of driving it, so by default i did the locks. Also i don't like the smell in the bottom of the locks - she doesn't seem to mind. I do drive/steer the boat now, but i still don't like doing the steering in the locks. We have commented to each other before how it always seems to be the women doing the lock work in general though.
  20. yes that's ten four r.d. i don't like the various shades of green it's painted but hey
  21. Hot, sweaty, muggy, cloudy now - still hot. Head hurt, my legs r sweating - not right. The t shirt i had on yesterday had salt stains down the back of it...... I think a trip to the showers is in order.....later......when it's (hopefully) cooler.
  22. Thank you vey much all! I'll have a look into getting the cam belt changed and keep an eye out for a haynes manual - i think i'll go see if ebay has owt to offer. As to the gauges, no charging light only a temperature gauge, but i don't think the alternators working anyway, but that's another small problem! There is a switch, but i have no idea what it does, its a basic on/off, i've flicked it in both positions and checked my tunnel light and it ain't that, and as all the wires are all red and all bound together i think i'm gonna have a problem figuring out what it does (if anything)! Thanks again much appreciated
  23. So i've been told my engine is a ford XLD 1.8l engine, that is pretty much all i know about it, i was trying online to look for some kind of manual for it but i seem to be getting nowhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also the only gauge i have on my "control panel" is an oil temp gauge. could i add a rev counter or other things (i don't know what else you can have, i am in techy terms a noob) Cheers all
