  1. Alan knows much more about this type of thing, but where/what is it that bans open flue appliances? The Recreational Craft Regulations 2017 require gas appliances to be installed in accordance with manufacturers' instructions and maybe that precludes it in practice, but where is the rule in principle?
  2. Quite right. Boating, by which I mean cruising, is the best part by far. Whilst there may be rare occasions when it is a necessity, I would avoid paying to have a boat transported by road as it subtracts from my enjoyment. FWIW, I have crayoned-in the whole of the connected system (and much of the outlying parts too) without resorting to paying someone else to deprive me of my enjoyment.

  6. OK - overplating has a greater effect on draft on a shorter boat than a longer one, all other things being equal. But typically not stability, in any conventional sense that is.
  7. Would that not impact more on the draft rather than stability?
  8. Thanks. I think you have to demonstrate that you meet the RCR Essential Requirements rather than achieve the equivalent of ISOs. And the RCR includes some specific requirements for fuel systems but nothing about inspection hatches in tanks.
  9. Does that just not say that if the craft meets the ISOs it is deemed to meet/exceed the RCR? It doesn't say you have to meet the ISOs in themselves to satisfy the RCR; there may be other means of complying with the Essential Requirements. The Building Regulations operate in much the same manner. For example, there is a requirement for building stability and Approved Documents for some methods of achieving that requirement. But if you can demonstrate stability by another technique, you comply with the law.
  10. Was the validity of the BSS pass result affected/ cancelled by the boat not, in fact, being compliant at the test time and immediately after? If so, your licence and insurance.........

The man on the Clapham Omnibus is useful in deciding what is reasonable behaviour in negligence cases rather than interpreting statute. Presumably a sign saying dogs may not foul the pavement gives them full liberty to foul the recreation ground? The 14 day thing is a licensing condition. It does not grant a right to moor. Apart from anything else, it does not say anything about where such a right can be exercised - for example adjacent to a towpath? Any land then owned by BW? Any part of anyone's land adjacent to a navigation? Other than where a sign says otherwise? Who knows.
  12. A quick glance at the Recreational Craft Regulations 2017 does not reveal any requirement for an inspection hatch in Schedule 1 (Essential requirements for manufacturers) https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2017/737/schedule/1 whereas the British Standard you refer to does require a hatch. This seems to leave the question as to where lies the RCR requirement to build to British Standards?

I don't think so. Ss43(6) says this: "The services and facilities referred to in subsection (3) of this section include, in the case of the British Waterways Board [and Canal & River Trust], the use of any inland waterway owned or managed by them by any ship or boat."

It simply doesn't follow that because you mustn't remain in the same place for more than 14 days (to obtain a licence) you have been given a legal right to moor anywhere of your choosing for up to 14 days. There may be an implication of sorts, but no more. Nigel Moore was very knowledgeable but not infallible; the judge in his eponymous case rejected the great majority of his argument.
  15. I think you need to be quite sure that the level.on the gearbox dipstick is being read correctly. It seems simple enough but it is easy to pick up a misleading smear of oil even when the level is low. You could try sucking on a clear tube poked just below the 'full' level to see whether oil or air is lifted.

And where is the grant of this right to moor in one place for 14 days (unless signed differently)? It's not the British Waterways Act 1995 which merely makes it a licence pre-condition (in the alternative) not to remain in the same place for more than 14 days. It does not expressly grant the right to moor. And certainly there is no mention of subject-to-signage.
  17. As my father wryly remarked at the time, The Waterways Trust was entirely independent of BW. They shared the same address and the same people answered the 'phone, but that was only to be expected of independent bodies.

Waste water entering the public sewers is not metered. An assumption is made as to the proportion (80% is typical for dwellings) of the fresh water that is returned. One would hope CRT negotiate a small proportion as little of its fresh water finds its way into the main drains

I think you have the decimal point in the wrong place. O.2ppl (£2 per cubic meter) is more plausible.
  20. A couple of short lengths of angle iron bolted through the bearing housing with a flat plate welded across the back. This would be easier to fabricate than the shaped and bent piece of the neighbours. But whatever the arrangement, I agree it need more than only being cantilevered off the narrow support provided by the bearing housing. A couple of rubber door stops pressing on the top of the fuel tank would be better than nothing.
  21. Is it still planned to pass legislation taking force in 2025? Not much time remains and it's looking increasingly unlikely to me

I recall it being a total 50p per week to moor in an off-line basin on the Medway. Probably gone up now.
  23. I wonder if someone put a note about the correct oil level on the air inlet because it is near the dipstick.
  24. Turn the prop only 33% faster to make the boat goes 66% faster? Something's not quite right here.
