Agreed, but that still applies whether or not you are running it straight off the flywheel rim.

With an output of all of 30 ~ 35 A a poly V belt is overkill.  It would also be impracticable to get sufficient belt-wrap on the alternator pully.

 

The 70 A A127 on the domestic side does have a 6 PK belt albeit it too could do with a bit more belt wrap. However It Works OK and doesn't screech if I keep the belt tension right so ICBA making an idler pulley and  mounting arrangements to get the extra wrap.
