running costs

could anyone give me a breakdown of costs involved in living on a narrowboat

i.e mooring fees

licences

plus any other costs involved

Insurance depends on boat value etc. (minimum third party for I believe £2,000,000 maybe £3,000,000)

 

Other costs maintenance/repair open ended.

Plenty of threads here discussing costs if you search for them, but as a quick guide, for a 57ft boat:

 

Licence about £600

 

Mooring, about £1200 BW on-line to £3500 marina, in average place - i.e. not london etc. Could be a lot more if residential.

 

Running costs: much the same as a small house, say a 2 bed semi.

 

You can do it on the cheap, depends on your required comfort level - there are people that live on the cut in a 16ft plastic boat and pay nothing for licence etc, but they are only a very small level above a homeless tramp.

 

Don't go for the idea of getting a boat as a cheap alternative to buing a house etc.
