Unfortunately we will be selling our boat soon. We really want to sell it through a broker, can't be bothered advertising it myself, so we need everyones advice on here who has used a broker before. We live in Cheshire so your advice will be welcome on brokers from round the area, or at least the Northwest. Thanks

We've just sold one boat through Bridge House Marina on the Lancaster Canal at Garstang. They're very nice people and look after you and your interests, I can't praise them to highly.

A good starting point in selecting a broker is deciding how much your boat is worth, its top range then go for the likes of ABNB, where you know that the potential customers will be shown round the boat, if you have plenty of time and are happy to have the boat on dry land which may save you mooring fees, then you could consider Haral where there are many boats to choose from on one site so I guess will attract buyers who will visit to view a number of boats at the same time. Then you have "boatfinder" which is web based, has a good site but expensive in my view for what you get, they are based in Northwich but sell off the boats home mooring. But really this only scratches the surface you have many to choose from

Hi there

I also live in Cheshire and chose Whilton Marina to sell mine, near Daventry!

Whilst I appreciate it may not therefore be the first place that springs to mind I consider it a very wise decision.

Their's was the site which gave me the best impression of professionalism etc at the time. I rang them and their sales manager was totally happy to come out to meet me at my boat, also moored in Cheshire a few days later to discuss and value. I found him very pleasant, professional, honest and knowledgeable and decided they were the company for me!!

We chose to move the boat there ourselves, and had a fantastic last 6 day cruise there with my pride and joy.

Sadly the monkeys sold it within a few months, for a price close to the asking amount and I have missed her ever since!

All the best

Dan

P.S If you don't chose them I'd advise to go with your gut instincts based on their website - e.g the difference between Harrals and Whilton's is pretty vast. I drew my own conclusions from this, which now seem supported by a few stories I've read on here since

Although you said you didn't want to sell it yourself, I sold my Viking 28 cruiser last year privately and made a lot more money than had I sold it through a broker.

The nearest broker specialising in GRP cruisers reckoned £12K-£14K would be the most I could expect less 10% commission (inc VAT) less £600 to get it transported overland to the broker. Net result for me: somewhere in the region of £10K-£12K.

So I advertised the boat on www.boatsandoutboards.com for FREE and sold the boat at its asking price of £17K within 4 weeks. No commission, no transport fees, no hassle..... and the nice couple that bought it were equally delighted so a win-win for all.

Got to be at least worth a thought.
