The issue is the lock cill on the 4th one down. There's a crack and it's letting water out faster than you can fill the lock.

Should know more about how long soon. Then we either have the option of going back round the other way (if it's a long job) or sitting tight.

Now just an email from waterscape saying that they've shut Gargrave Locks because of lack of water !!!!!!!

Hopefully it's just overnight.

And it's been raining all day !!!

All the water goes down to the South.....due to gravity.

News on the ground is that it's likely to be about 3 weeks - we may have to turn around & go over the Hudd (is that clear yet?)

Leeds & Liverpool Canal - Lock 48 (Barrowford)
Monday 5 August 2013 until further notice
UPDATE (06 August 2013): Our team have investigated the issue and confirmed that the cill is significantly damaged.
The concrete requires re-setting before the cill can be fully repaired.
An update will be issued on Friday 9 August.

We're hoping to hear something concrete (pardon the pun!) about approx time later on today. If we wait for Fri then we can't make it via the Hudd either.

Gah! Nice camaraderie with everyone else here though - good bunch of people!

The last time this happened BW advised weeks but in truth had it done in under a week.

The HNC was shut yesterday due to a sunken boat but suspect it will be cleared soon.

Worth checking for tunnel availability on the HNC it is normally quite busy at this time of year.

How long do you have to make it to Swanley?

I hope it's the same again this time Richard. We're booked for the liverpool link at the end of August (coming from Leeds) so if it's three weeks we will have to cancel or at least delay that.

I'm not sure our boat would fit through standedge tunnel and we did the Rochdale last year so I was really hoping to be able to cross the L&L this time. Let's hope it's good news on Friday....

We've got 2 weeks to get to Swanley. We know we can make it with long days across the HNC, but they don't think they'll get it dug out by Friday. Repairs they think will take next week, and then the concrete has to dry. C&RT don't have any info other than 'update on Fri'.

Having to turn round simply because it's better knowing we can get there rather than getting stuck possibly for the full fortnight.

We've got the tunnel booked and fingers crossed! Hope it all clears in time for you DJW

Barrowford lock being the 'it' being dug out. It's been a long day already! Sorry for the incoherence :)

Are these locks on the Wigan end of the L&L.....rather than the Leeds end.....?

Can anyone tell me if the Rochdale is navigable at the moment...I heard it was closed due to water issues...?

Barrowford Locks are in the direction of Wigan/Burnely/Blackburn not long after you pass through Foulridge Tunnel but before you get to Nelson.

Just found the latest on CART's web site. Should be OK by the time we get there.

Associated Regional Office: North West Waterways

UPDATE (09 August 2013): Our teams have been in the process of designing the appropriate repair and verifying access requirements.

Works on site will mobilise today (9 August 2013) with the installation of scaffold for suitable access to the lock. Pumps will also be delivered to manage the water. The team will be working through the weekend to deliver the scheme in the most time efficient way possible.

We anticipate that the works should take approximately one week, once mobilised on site.An update will be issued before midday on Monday 12 August.
