TOP of Rochdale 9 - Moorings ?

Any suggestions as to the best place to moor above the Rochdale 9 in Manchester. We're aiming to go up to Ashton early on a Sunday, and would rather not tackle Rochdale & Ashton in a single morning. Last time we tried it, despite an experienced crew of 7, we didn't get a pub stop until nearly 4pm ! I've heard that there visitor moorings at New Islington - Does it cost ?

That should be quite close to The Jolly Angler cheers.gif

You can just moor immediately above the top lock on the towpath. Plenty of rings - we've never had any problems there. If worried you can moor on the pontoon opposite but you will be looking into the office windows. We've also moored just round the corner where there are some bollards and there are some pointoon moorings in a small basin. Others moor a bit further along the Ashton on the offside where it is gated - can't recall what it is called.

Droylsden Marina at Ashton top lock will give you a mooring overnight if you don't want to go on further.

Regards

Pete

We've moored around the corner on the bollards and were cast off in the middle of the night, which wouldn't have been a problem except it was a windy night and we ended up banging against another boat, which woke us up. So the next time we moored on the offside above the Rochdale 9, against the pontoon and had a peaceful night.

It's Telford Basin that is gated and it would seem the best place to moor if you are heading up the Ashton the next morning.

Not sure if this info is too late but you can moor up on rings just before bridge and first lock of the Ashton in Piccadilly village. If your boat is 45 feet or less there is a short arm just before you can back into.

Both seem a little safer than those immediately after Rochdale 9 top lock and you won't have to back up to the Ashton junction.

When you say 'gated' do you mean it needs a BW key to get in/out or that you can't get out at all...

Telford Basin is a good mooring, it's on the offside a hundred yards around the corner above the locks, towards the Ashton. It's a secure area in that pedestrian access is by gates with a security code which the local residents will happily tell you. The basin is open to boats (although it's a tight fit for a long boat, and coming from the Rochdale you may have to go in backwards) but there is a good offside mooring just before it, immediately after the aqueduct, which is still within the secure area and has room for a couple of full-length boats.

I haven't stopped there but I understand a code is needed to open the gate to the development and I have read here that the residents are helpful and will tell you the code number.

ETA. Too slow :)

Where exactly is the entrance to New Islington Marina ? Isn't it accessed from The Rochdale ? I know there is the Islington arm off The Ashton..

2 locks up on the Rochdale from where you would normally turn into the Ashton.
