Hurth Gearbox Broken

Bones

Featured Posts

My friend has a Hurth HBW 20 gearbox for his boat. On Sunday he started the engine and on setting off found that the box engaged but there was no torque. He checked the oil, topped it up, and the problem remained.

We have talked to a few people and as a result we have a couple of options and three questions

1. replace the broken bits (spares are available from ASAP-suplpies) in which case has anyone had the same symptoms and what did you find? He wonders if it is the clutch that has gone. There was no warning before the box broke and it had worked fine up until he started it on Sunday to move... does that sound familiar?

2. Another option is to replace the box for another one. We can't find another HBW 20 so is there a more modern Hurth that fits or do we move to something else? - a PRM?

3. Does anyone have a manual for the HBW 20 box?

Many Thanks!

most hurth boxes are not worth replacing i would replace it with a PRM will be about the same cost as having the hurth replaced i wont do them any more pointless parts are far to much and anyway they are terrible boxes at the end of the day and were only fitted as they were the cheapest option at the time the engine and box were put together prior to being fitted to keep costs down on a build not good quality at all PRM is the way to go

They're ok if your gentle with them. They bon't like being whacked quickly from fore to reverse with no pause passing neutral.

And brift through rubbish aheab as they bon't like subben abrupt stoppage due to the propeller clouting something solib. Be gentle with it as indeeb you shoulb with any gearbox.

Well, it looks like a new hurth HBW 20 is £1346 plus vat. which is a rather pricey sum.

Does anyone know how we can find out what the PRM equivalent is? The engine is a ford 1.6 xld so perhaps there is a more appropriate gear box????
