It might help to know the make of inverter. Also, with and without the engine running the battery volts. My inverter does not go through the main isolating switch because the current draw is huge at high mains loads. So maybe yours does not and you have flattened the battery overnight?

More info needed as suggested, but you should turn inverter on first without load before turning on mains switch.

Depends a lot on how low your batteries were. Half-discharged batteries need anything up to 20 hours of engine running to fully recharge them. Having said that; there should be something in them to run things and at least wake the inverter up, even if it drops out when a load is put on it.

You need to give battery voltage readings for a start, otherwise you are just fumbling (literally!) in the dark.

Battery voltqage needs to be taken after an hour or two after the engine is stopped, preferably also after a small load has been on them.

Realistically 20 minutes running will barely replace energy used in starting engine, let alone put much into the leisure batteries. Is your starting battery and leisure batteries on separate circuits? How many leisure batteries and how old? What output alternator? As already said, much more info required including the load being applied to the invertor / battery (or batteries). Even for modest use you need at least 2 leisure batteries. We've got 4 leisure and 2 starter charged through a 1-2-both-off switch. You don't necessarily need an expensive Stirling type charging system, but they do make a better job of keeping the batteries properly charged. Very important if living aboard.

My guess is undercharged batteries but as said we need lots more info.

yes sorry it was the batteries taht were low, we have now also discovered that we thought we had three leisure batteries but one of them was different, not great to use as leisure, any way all good again for now thanks for help all, as always joy on daisy may xxxxxx
