I would assume that horseboats that ended up buttying to a motor would then be called a butty. Happy to be contradicted, btw (and expect to be). I meant that. It's thought by some that it may be a term originating from the London area, but Monkey boat or 'Monk' boat has generally meant a motor. Not frequently used, probably because there seems to be no solid basis for its designation. It's a 'Motor'. Shorter, simpler. Spur of the moment search: Monk; Boat Builders.
