Bottom Blackened

Help a confused sole.

 

I'm taking Empire to have its bottom blacked on Wednesday. A first for me.

My question is why do we say Bottom Blackened or Blacked when the bottom isn't Blacked it's the side?

I hope I'm not talking Bo*"!-cks. I did say it was my first time

It's a relatively new description which has crept in.

Used to be that you had the boat blacked. Maybe that idea creates a frightening vision for people with expensively painted shiny cabin sides

Thanks Tim, I was begining to think it was a secret. I shall use the term Boat Blacked from now on.
