Where the Derwent Went

Despite local rumour, Sutton lock on the Yorks Derwent is passable, just. You do need to give the EA 48 hours notice though.

The navigation from there to Stamford Bridge is a bit dodgy with overhanging trees almost blocking the river in a few places. It isn't the river for a brand new paint job. But we made it yesterday, for the third time, and were able to moor in the bottom lock chamber of Stamford Bridge lock. It was deep water all the way.

The village is an excellent cruising target with several take-away shops, a general store, post office, vast DIY store, a malt whisky shop that stocks over a hundred whiskies, and a pub, The Swordsman, that sells Sam Smiths bitter 4abv at £1.44 per pint, and three other pubs also.

All we need to do is to encourage more boaters to the Yorks Derwent above the Pocklington canal junction and to try to persuade Stamford Bridge Council to put in some floating pontoon moorings below the bridge.

I'm also trying to organise a tree cutting-back expedition in the Spring.

Navigation of the Derwent above Sutton lock is at the discretion of the riparian landowners. Below Stamford Bridge, this isn't a problem.

The lock at Barmby Barrage where the Derwent meets the Ouse is greatly under-used. Use it or lose it folks.

There is some video of yesterday's trip, courtesy of Clive Lister, here:

Pm me Tony when you do I'll have time on my hands then and would like to help - it's also one of the inland waterways closest to home so no big deal for me to get there.

Anyone is welcome at any time, more or less. But give me a call first as my boat is moored on a secured Island. If anyone wants my mobile number PM me.

I reckon to do a tree-clearance run with ex-BW Bantam tug Kingfisher and a hopper, round about Easter 2011 if anyone else is up for it. Camping can be arranged.

No narrowboats, just 5 cruisers at the moment ranging from 25ft to 45ft. Should be good fun.

We have not been on the Derwent yet so it certainly isnt us in your video Tone :D

I hear you've got an impressive reputstion.

Typo error.... and "a" is very close to "s" on the keyboard when your shaking like a leaf having recieved a sneer from someone who has the time to post AN AVERAGE OF 14.65 posts a day, every day since 2008!

Your humility is noted.

Carry on!

Just a small point, but if you're going to do a tree-cutting expedition, it might be best to time it for earlier in the year, as if there are birds nesting in the trees you won't be able to legally cut them back.

It'll be when the levels allow. There won't be any birds nesting in those low overhanging branches.

No intimate details to give you really. Set off for Torksey on Friday evening. Head down to Keadby on Saturday, then down the Humber to Hull on Sunday. Two or three nights in Hull, weather dependant we may head across to Grimsby and out to Spurn point, then take a few days to head back up to Torksey. We have the week off so are in no rush to head anywhere as you can see from the timings.
