RLWP
Does anybody know if the last bridge before the basin in Stratford is still realy low, iknocked the rear hatch handle off a hire boat last time i was there and we are heading there early august(dont want to damage the Farie). Also who will we be passing for a beer??? It'as low enough to make you want to stoop a bit, but we've not had any trouble getting under there, and our boat isn't particularly short. We live in Kenilworth, so depending on which way you come we could meet you for a pint at a suitable pub Knowle, Warwick, Leamington or somewhere on the Stratford. Send us a PM when you know where you'll be when, and if we're about we'll come and meet you. Sue Whoops, logged in as him again.
MoominPapa
You are more likely to grate along something if your route into Birmingham takes you through Ashtead Tunnel, in our experience - very easy to take paint of grab rails! Same problem, though we were going downhill and on emerging from the tunnel discovered that the lock bywash was blocked and the lockfull of water we'd just sent down had rather increased the level of the tunnel pound and was causing the fishermen to beat a hasty retreat. Oops. MP.

colinjw
Another thing about Bancroft Basin is the ease of shopping. WHAT?? I hear you ask but go to Morrisons supermarket in town and they deliver right to the bow of the boat. We did this a few years ago and it worked brilliantly provided there is a mobile phone on the boat. (Who doesn't have one now?) It save aching arms and sore fingers from carrying loads of shopping. MartinC
If you go down on to the river to moor I believe you need a “lock and moor” licence for the Avon from the tourist information centre at £6. Better to get the licence from the boatyard by the basin as you may have trouble finding the tourist information centre. It was in a very handy location just by the basin, tourists office where the tourists are. However Council's work in a funny way. The office at the basin is now a coach booking office. When we visited in June the TIC was in a shop in the town but all the towns signposts were still pointing down to the basin and the "new" shop had virtually no external identification. Not surprisingly, they were not very busy. Another thing about Bancroft Basin is the ease of shopping. WHAT?? Excellent bus service from Morrisons to the basin, free for those of us with grey hairs and a nice little plastic card!
