Is that the kent&east then?

I like the line about steam heat, the train crew are very keen on this coming on a soon as possable!!

- Infact the have a deal on in buffet car where and driver/fireman with a locmotive in steam and providing steamheat gets a free cooked breakfast.

- The only problem with this is that no locomotive in steam can be left unattended!! (doh)

It's the Bluebell Railway in Sussex, whose Sheffield Park HQ is adjacent to the former River Ouse navigation, closed in the 19thC but a canal society has been formed to investigate long-term reopening of all or part of same. The River Ouse reaches the sea at Newhaven via Lewes. Several of the lock structures are extant and have been weired, others have disappeared completely. The Sloop inn 2 miles from the station was so named after the boats that ran beside it, in sight of the railway, at Freshfield Lock. Nice thought to travel by steam train and horse-drawn boat to the Pub.

Clever thinking by the Buffet car team, feed the footplatemen or freeze! - driver and fireman take turns to breakfast or collect it as a takeaway to enjoy in the cab, paper plates etc straight in the fire, no washing up. The period of time you're at Uni should be enough to become a rostered Fireman, without overcommitting yourself. Loco footplate must make an interesting change from Emily Anne's engineroom, especially at speed.

Ah right, yeah, that works too (ie, the bluebell is also in sussex!)

As for becoming a fireman while at uni, yes, thats the rough plan.

- Although atm im quite happy working in the shed anyway, great fun!

- I have done two runs on the railway in the cab, duing which i got to operate the regulator/airbrake/injectors/shovel. (although that was as a paying customer)
