It's not standard practice but it is good practice and it would be a mega fuse or suchlike in the region of 4-500A - you will be probably using somewhere around 300A to turn the starter.

 

Mind whether a fuse would prevent a fire started by a wiring fault that passed that kind of current is debatable (and probably will be).

300+ amps seems alot for a starter solenoid, sounds like your mixing up with the motor. Think my car has around 30-40 amp fuse for solenoid.
