Leeds to Liverpool Cycle Records

Featured Posts

I have decided to list the record times for cycling from Leeds to Liverpool, Liverpool to Leeds and the round trip there and back along the towpath, on the cycling page on my website.

So far I have a time of 22 hours 38 minutes (Colin Dobson http://colindobson.blogspot.com/) for the round trip but no times yet for the one way trips.

there will be points given, for example:

10pts for each fishing rod snapped

100pts for each OAP knocked into the cut (bonus 50points for a couple)

5pt for a duckling

15pts for a boaters barbie

500pts for a nun pushing a pram

anyone who has seen Death Race 2000 will get the idea.

There are links to other cyclists blogs on my site: http://www.towpathtreks.co.uk/LLC/canal_cycling_guide.html and a message board for questions about the ride: http://www.towpathtreks.co.uk/message_board.html

Hopefully we can have a few more making the ride before the winter sets in.

speed record, on a bike, on the towpath.

I think this is a very bad idea and I wish you would not encourage it.

Someone is going to ride over a perch pole, or collide with someone in a bridge hole, or go flying over a mooring pin, or plough into a dog or a small child, or cause some poor, unsuspecting towpath walker to end up in the cut.

I think throwing down this challenge is irresponsible and I hope you will reconsider.

The Waterways Code of Conduct says (for cyclists):

" Never race one another or perform speed trials. "

The Waterscape site states:

"The Waterways Code aims to protect your own and other people's safety, to safeguard the environment, and to avoid disturbing the enjoyment of other users of the waterway and towpath. There is no public right of way for cyclists on canal towpaths, and British Waterways reserves the right to withdraw permission from users who disregard the rules."

Another vote for BAD IDEA.

And I speak as a keen cyclist, particularly of towpaths, (albeit a bit lapsed of late).

If you must do it, do it in London, because then, sadly, you'll be indistinguishable from 80% of other cyclists.

At the risk of piling on, what an utterly BAD idea.

A much better idea to promote cycling and canals would be a feature describing the route from a cyclists perspective maybe highlighting points that extra care need to be taken (tunnels etc) but more importantly detailing all those lovely pubs that the cyclist can stop at to watch the world (and boats) go by!

I gave up trying these marathon "Lets do as much as I can in 24 hour" events a long time ago. Although I invariably succeeded in my goals I usually ended up feeling knackered and with the distinct feeling that I missed a lot. Rather than walking 20 hills in 24 hours I'd much rather take 3 days and enjoy the views.
