Constructing garden mooring

Anyone got any experience of constructing an end of garden mooring? Different ways to protect the bank? wooden/paved/grass quay? Ballpark costs? Alternatives? Contractors (E Midlands).

Cheers!

Hi GM welcome to the forum.

Just Googled 'canal side piling' and 'river side piling' and brought a few options. First thing though note you do need permission in most cases to create any sort of mooring on the canals or rivers.

Good luck..and let us know how you get on.

Your first step must be to seek permission from whichever navigation authority is responsible for the waterway. They will have standards and criteria for the construction of landing stages. They may then offer to build it for you - but in our experience they'll charge a lot more than a private contractor would. This was certainly our experience when we had ours built in 2006. It's a substantial wooden structure, in accordance with Middle Levels specification, and has some earth back filling but there is water underneath it, i.e. it's not backfilled right to the water's edge. As a guide, it cost us £3,000 for a 48 foot length.
