yes if you seperate the oil and water, the water will be mucky but can be dumped as the really bad stuff will be removed on seperation.

I have used in the past here at work used an enzyme type product 'oil muncher', this is good stuff, it turns oil into a sort of brown powder using a biological process, but I dont think its meant to work on a large mass, just spills.

Ah yes,

That's a question of interpretation, I guess.

AFAIR the regs require a separate area under the engine and gearbox of sufficient capacity to hold the oil from both the engine and gearbox.

If that area is full up with any old crap that's accumulated over the years, such that if you emptied your gearbox and sump into it it would overflow, then yes, I can see they would fail it.

The regs don't actually say there can't be oil, diesel, antifreeze and other muck sloshing around in the tray, only that it must be big enough. So I don't think they would fail a half full one, but probably would a near overflowing one.

Of course it's poor practice to have it full of much at all, because if something does start leaking, it's very hard to spot if it's going in to something that is anything other than empty.

Mind you I have a BMC, so I'm resigned to the fact that it will never be completely clean under the motor.

we also have a BMC, but it's the bilge, not the tray under the engine, that is the problem, I assume due to to 6 years of careless oil top ups on turn round day. It fills with water because rain falling on the semi trad area has nowhere else to go.

Clean your gutters shipmate...the rain...or most of it should drain offboard rather than inboard.

an old wire coat hanger is a smashing bit of kit for clearing drain holes.........if your bilge is still greasy then give it a liberal spray of GUNK or Washing up liquid and get down there and give it a good wiping....you should be able to 'pump your bilge' without leaving an oil slick......having said that....ive not known a boat yet that when the bilge pump activatved didnt leave a slick due to the residue from the Stern Gland

Hi

My Kelvin J3 leaks oil and diesel into the engine bay beneath. In the past I've used sawdust to absorb the liquid spill. It works well and can be quickly swept up, finishing with a vac round for all the hard to sweep areas. Absorbent mats are a future option, probably available from a janitorial suppliers, but are a bit steep cost wise.

I had a quantity of sullage water in the bilges, treated with fairy, jizer and traffic film remover and still a nasty oil mess and the marina staff said put it all down the elsan disposal - and looking at the disposal point quite a lot of paint products had also gone that way. Alternatives are to get a wavestream type device to filter out the oil. Pricey, but I have found that Parker make filters that do the same job for a few £££. And a wet vacumn cleaner.
