There's recentish case law which says that goods must be fit fot purpose for as long as you could reasonably expect them to be. I'd suspect that the 6 years mentioned is the statute of limitations kicking in.

 

I remember an article in one of the law journals regarding this and if anyone needs me to look it up PM me and i'll track it down.
