john4647
Where was Coccium? The answer to that is yesterday (sat 15th March) Coccium was in Outrington on the Bridgewater Canal. When we asked to where the name referred (we thought it was Chester or Ribchester) we were told Wigan. Being a disbelieving sort, I googled Coccium and it seems that there is some dispute as to the location. Claimants are Wigan, Blackburn and Standish. Apart from at the helm, I wonder where the Pie Eater stands in this dispute?
Liam
Hi John, Saw you pass earlier today. I knew the name rang a bell with me but I couldn't place it until this post jogged my memory. I thought it was Wigan too. As you're heading that way, ask them to point you in the right direction!
Pie Eater
John We named our boat after our home town (Wigan). Apparently there was a Roman fort called Coccium in or around where Wigan town centre is now, however we cannot prove as we were not around at that time! Steve Steve, I can nearly remember that far back, maybe we should ask some of the older members. In any case it was pleasant to spot another forum member.
