pied a terre west of London

Obviously everyone has their preferences, but the Slough Arm and the High Line moorings would not be at the high end of the moorings quality ladder. There is a similar quality of mooring on the old margarine factory arm at Norwood Top Lock, dont know who owns it though and they seem to specialise in boats that never move (fill it in and put the boats on blocks?). Packet Boat, Willowtree, Engineers Wharf and Brentford might represent the other end of the quality spectrum.

Thames; there are a load of squatters moorings above Kew bridge by the old gasworks site, license-free because it is tidal PLA water. Closer to the bridge there are proper legal moorings. I dont think there is anything residential anywhere else on the upper tideway. After that there are a few residential sites above Teddington.

You both must love to live dangerously - you sure are giving them plenty of opportunity to go bust! On that timescale, a crisis that hasn't even started yet could swallow up your money.

Well, yes that is true, but it depends what you want really, working on the principle that a meltdown is only just round the corner, I might never make a decision or build something I will be be proud to have designed and helped to build . I could have an off-the-peg boat delivered to me in 6 weeks and it might even be a bit cheaper but it's not what I want so I must therefore take the risk - it's an integral part of the deal really.

You can never protect yourself fully from risk and I've put in safeguards as far as I can (build in distinct stages - shell then fit-out and work surveyed and signed over to me in monthly payments when the surveyor is happy). The builder has a very long track record and insurance and for the rest I have to have faith.

Willow tree marina often has a modest range of smaller NB and cruisers available with Pied de terre moorings

we viewed there and thought it relatively safe / clean etc, tescos is 2 mins walk around the corner and its very acessible to m4/m40..

But no onsite parking and nearest alternative parking some distance away as of 1st Jan this year. Very handy dry dock though. Mooring permit payable to BW. HTH D

you must be thinking of a different marina (or i've misunderstood which marina you're referring to), because willowtree does not have a dry dock, and it does have it's own car park. and moorings aren't to BW, it's a private marina which also acts as a brokerage.

i live at willowtree and it is a good, secure place to live, although there are going to be some new (extortionate) charges from 2009 - definitely for residents, and i think also for pied a terre. there are several boats for sale, details at http://www.willowtree-marina.co.uk/.

Sorry folks, got my Willow Tree and Willow Wren muddled up. Willow Tree very nice private marina as Michelleandchris say. Willow Wren near Bulls Bridge Tescos. D

Cheers everyone, keep em coming if you have any more (especially any more Thames based ones). I'll try and look at a couple of the recommended places this/next week.

@WJM: is the old gas works the patch of park by the island and that arts centre type thing? I've always wondered about those boats.
