Hello, We are Jeff & Rach and we are looking for a widebeam boat to live on, preferably in the south west of england. We are looking to buy a boat ourselves to live on but would like the boat experience before buying. Has anyone got any suggestions for the best way to go about this? Any suggestions would be greatly received!!

I would be tempted to hire a boat for a taster, at this time of year you might find a good deal and it would be the worst case scenario weather wise so it would give you a real taste.

Wide/broad beam hire is fairly rare but their are companies out there that do it mainly in the North of England though.

The next step will be is the budget for a new build or used boat, unfortunately broad beam boats seem to be holding their value very well and don't come cheap new or used.

The choice of wide beam boat is fairly large you can get an idea of the type of things we build HERE it is worth doing a bit of research along the way because it is quite difficult to build a poor narrow ditch crawler because of its proportions but the same isn't true of wide boats and the wider they get the more complex the engineering can become if it is to be done correctly. (I have seen more "lemon" wide boats than narrow! <_< )

There's a couple of privately owned wide beam hireboats based near Bath you could try for a short notice deal one is moonboats (.co.uk i recall) and the other is name Grand Cru and may or may not be on the net. There's also quite a few cruising up and down between Bradford-on-Avon and Bath, worth walking the towpath.

Able to offer brand new 55' widebeam 'demonstration boat', moored approx 1hour from London (A1), on a 'try before you buy basis'.

If you are interested please send me an email for further details.

For additional experience, Bisham Abbey Sailing School is one of the few (possibly only) places that can offer the Inland Helmsmans course on a widebeam.
