magpie patrick
I picked this up yesterday at the book stall by Hollingwood lock on the Chesterfield Canal - one of the reason I collect navigation guides is they capture the situation at the time. In this case the river was only navigable to Pershore, the Water Gate was still in use and there was a warning for those who chose to pass above it... It was possible to have the water gate closed by arrangement, but I'm guessing Pershore lock wasn't usable as the guide's coverage stops there.
Graham_Robinson
We bought that edition of that guide to navigate the Avon in a Tardebigge Boat Co. boat that was in 1964. Still got the guide.
Ogwr
My Dad hired a boat from Bathursts at Tewkesbury in 195960 and as far as i can remember the Pershore water gate was removed by then.and Pershore was the llimit. In 1962 after the Stourbridge rally in 1962 we got up as far as Cropthorne. I beleive the gate was removed in 1963.
blackrose
Didn't they get the local borstals to do a lot of the work on those Avon locks? In the days when child slave labour was still allowed. Maybe modern boaters should all be paying reparations to the families. 😋
