Not sure the peeps in this decision making process have spotted this yet, but, we are infract an Island, we are surrounded by, you're there ahead of me here,  WATER!

Surely some body, on their trip down to their PC correct holiday to tsea-side, is going have the lightbulb moment and:

Methods of seawater purification

Desalination can be achieved in a variety of ways.

Vacuum distillation, geothermal desalination, membrane processes (Reverse Osmosis) and even solar desalination are all potential methods that can be used to cleanse and treat water so that it can be drunk, used in industry or for irrigating crops in agriculture.

Water can be desalinated using this water purification process when it has been taken from the sea, or from other saltwater sources and locations.

Even on a small scale, businesses can sometimes put desalination into action on-site if they have the right equipment and processes to be able to do so.

Or maybe, they don't have personal investments in such stuff, in which case, it would be a nogoer.

Been their done that!
The Australian State of Victoria was short of water a few years back, 2007, so a desalination plant was constructed by 2012.
However the plant was immediately put into standby mode.
It was not used until 2017! However it costs over £3 million a year even if no water is ordered.
The supply Contract runs for 27 years and will cost over £10 billion to maintain.

It is generally considered a total White Elephant by residents who have to pay for it.

Thames water have one, it's been mothballed since they decided it was better to funnel profits to shareholders than produce drinkable water.

Yes it is. That will probably be the end of cheep soft fruit from Spain for the UK then. Probably funded by the EU.
Morocco will love that and we may even get the Morocco - Poole sea link after all.

The idea presumably to build extra reservoirs and pipelines linked to the waterways and use the above noted waterways as a conduits for water from less drought prone areas

Therefore let them them drink canal water but top up the canal.
