So that's what is inside. Wish I could engage gears a bit more gently though, it tends to go in with a thump, probably the inertia of a long drive train.

Hydraulic accumulator kit?  Can you drop the tickover before engagement? Or if single lever ensure that it does not rev before it engages.

I don't think there is a kit available for the smallest hydraulic box, I found it surprisingly difficult to get the single lever control set up to work well, its actually not bad now but it did used to make we wince a bit and I worried - probably unnecessarily - about damaging the innards. Anyway, after lots of fiddling with cables the thing now engages with a soft thump instead of a clunk, the engine speed was always OK, it engaged at tickover speed (800rpm I think, its a Kubota 43hp) so the long and heavy shaft, couplings and 20" prop has to go from rest to approx 400 rpm pretty much instantly. Years ago I had a Technodrive box which was great, you could slip the clutch for fine manouevers. Wonderful. Sadly the plates lasted for not many weeks....... Ho Hum.
