Bit of advice for those with Victron Bluetooth devices

At least with cars, international agreements ensure owners can get third party fault code readers and some that will clear the faults as well. My one for VAG vehicles tells me the suspect component in plain text, but will also do other makes and return a code. Appliance manufacturers should be forced to do the same, but won't while they can get away with call-outs costing hundreds of pounds.

Yes, it's a rip-off 😞

But it won't change until governments decide that consumers should have precedence over manufacturers, so the UK government is certainly unlikely to do anything to change this -- somewhere like Germany or Scandinavia or France might.

If only we were in some kind of alliance with them which could force the manufacturers to play nicely... 😞

If you have a Bluetooth controlled victron device or indeed one from another make change the default access code…

The instructions recommend changing the pin code.

However I am not really sure why it should be an issue if someone on the boat next door can see what your battery charger is doing ?

They could presumably change the PIN from the default and thus prevent the legit owner accessing the settings.

You can more than see it. You could change all the parameters or indeed lock it out..then change the pin code so the owner couldn’t get in without a bit of faff possibly involving a wired interface. I know it’s unlikely but it was more a warning to change the default pin.

Indeed so.

Fair enough .

The pin can be reset to the factory setting.

However it sounds like two boat owners did not read the instructions and left the pin code unchanged .

Yes, most devices allow you to do this but it will reset all the parameters the owner will have set which can be a right faff.

Much better to just change the PIN on installation.
