I must admit that I thought that most garden bees were male, and that the females or "queens" stayed in their hives.

Honey bee queens and workers are female. The male drones do very little, apart from when they are called on to fertilise a new queen on her maiden flight. After fertilising the queen they die. Those that survive without fertilising a queen get pushed out of the hive to die when autumn comes.
