MOTABILITY CARS

Hi there,

We are new to this forum and as we intend to become liveaboards as soon as possible, we thought we would join and say hello!

I don't know if anyone can help us, but there are several things we need to sort out. Such as, if you are lucky enough to get a place in a Marina does life go on pretty much the same as now (In respect of Banks, Cards, Doctors etc.) and if you live in a permanent mooring and can't use that as your address, does anyone know if it is legal to use a parent's address for instance, or do they have to tell fibbies on the "Electoral Register" However more than that, my husband has a "Motability Car" and we were wondering if anyone out there had one too.

If so have they been allowed to keep it in the Marina or mooring? or does "Motability" think it is somewhere else such as they have moved house, or do they give their parents or friends as a C/O address.

Thanks very much'

Lots of love,

Kriss x x x

Hi Kriss welcome to the forum!

Sorry I can't help much on the Motability scheme, but I don't know if you are aware that you can get tax relief for the registered disabled on boats?

If this applies drop me a PM and I will point you in the right direction.

At the beginning of the adventure into boat ownership the free CBA handbook How To Buy A Boat For Canal OR River is well worth getting hold of, you can view and order the latest copy HERE.

It is also worth having a look at the Residential Boat Owners Association site HERE they also publish a book called living afloat that can answer a lot of your questions.

Hope this helps a bit. :D

Good point about the tax relief Gary, I didn't know that until I told a Tax Relief bod, in passing, when telling him about sprog 2's arrival, that sprog 1 was autistic.

Two weeks later £1600 back payment in the bank. Nice!

I'm not sure about the motability question because, though George qualifies, I haven't taken it up, because we don't need it. But we never had any other problems with DLA and such, when we were on the boat.

OK here goes with a quick exsplanation:-

We build boats for eligble customers at Zero Rate VAT (List price less 17.5%) under the guidance given in:-

VAT reliefs for disabled people HMRC Reference:Notice 701/7 (August 2002)

EXTRACT

4.4 BoatsYou can zero rate the supply to an eligible customer as detailed in paragraph 3.1 of a boat which is designed, or prior to supply is substantially and permanently adapted, for use by disabled persons or to carry disabled persons.

To qualify for relief, a boat should include all or most of the following features:a ramp for wheelchairs; lifts and level non cambered surfaces to accommodate wheelchair movements; specialised washing and lavatory facilities accessible to disabled people; specially equipped galley and sleeping areas and steering facilities designed for use by disabled people; handrails; and wheelchair clamps.

If the boat does not meet the above conditions, it may still qualify for VAT zero-rating under a separate relief (Notice 744C - Ships, aircraft and associated services).

To decide if you fall under the criteria required have a look at the full guidance HERE.

Like most things involving HMR&C they maintain the right to stitch up the supplier if they feel like it under:-

2.3 Who decides whether goods or services qualify for zero-rating?

The supplier is responsible for ensuring that all the conditions for zero-rating are met.

We will not ordinarily provide binding VAT rulings to a retailer or distributor on the eligibility of specific items for VAT relief.

Because of this not all builders will become involved in supplying boats with VAT reliefs for disabled people because if all goes wrong they will have the VAT to pay while those that will are careful to apply the guidance and take other measures in case at a later date HMR&C have a change of heart on the guidance or the like!

Hope that helps a bit.

Hi Colin

The full boat is zero rated provideing the boat is equipped to her needs.

We will be starting a broad beam with lift in the next few months so I will keep people informed what is involved.

Hi Gary,

Thanks very much for all your help and the links you kindly put on your site. I had a read of the booklet and went on to the site of the RBOA which we have decided to join. We will be watching with great interest what happens with your widebeam, as that is what we need.

Lots of love,

Kriss x x x :cheers::lol:

P.S. Changing the subject, we are going to buy one of these "log makers." Not the brick type, the one you use dry. However it says you're not to use glossy paper in them. Maybe I'm daft but can anyone tell me if that means things like TV mags, junk mail etc. Or does it mean the really GLOSSY stuff that you see about?

Oh! and can anyone tell me why please?

x x x
