barmyfluid Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 A few hull coating data sheets I've seen recently specify an alkaline degreaser as part of the prep. What are people using? I was thinking of plain soda crystals in hot water, safe and cheap, pH of around 11, would that do the job?
Jen-in-Wellies Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 Which hull coating data sheets are these? I've never seen, or heard of alkaline degreaser being used on any blacking for inland steel hulls. I may even have read the instructions on the tin at some time! Are we talking about anti-foul for GRP hulls, or something else? My concern with using anything that is going to be rinsed off is where is the rinse water going to end up? The cut, storm drain, sewer? In each case someone might have something to say about a high pH chemical ending up in it. Jen

Jen SML Vinyguard and Ballastic epoxy for a couple: https://www.smlmarinepaints.co.uk/files/library/files/DATA_SHEETS/Vinyguard_Silvergrey_88_AG.pdf I've never seen it as a requirement for standard blacking either, though I'd guess it's not immune. I would be wary of high pH or chemical runoff, that's why I thought soda crystals may be a good choice, they're pretty innocuous in the scheme of things, they're used in laundry etc. 1
Chewbacka Posted August 19, 2020 Report Posted August 19, 2020 (edited) I think sugar soap is an alkaline degreaser, I shall google it. added It is according to Wikipedia Edited August 19, 2020 by Chewbacka
