River Stort, stoppage.

Featured Posts

Due to lack of rainfall at the feeders, but mainly because of the bottom gates at Twyford lock 2 which are leaking raelly seriousely and the top gates are not much better, the lock has been locked off and ashed about six time over the last six weeks or so. It is now shut down again. Proper repairs to these lock gates were supposed to have been done last winter and is now potponed until next winter 2020-2021 !!!!. We can't go anywhere except up through lock 1 Southmill to B.Stortford town but even that can leave boats moored up there aground, so we have to be very careful of that through the lack of rainfall.

Half way between lock 1 and lock 2 there is a Willow tree on the towpath side leaning right out over the towpath and river at at least a 45 degree angle, looks about to uproot and fall. Walkers are sauntering along the towpath under this tree and seem oblivious of the extreme danger.

What effect is this having on the rest of the Stort in that area? I'm in Hallingbury and was thinking of heading towards Sawbridgeworth at the weekend. Don't want to bother if there are issues with water levels.

I have been curious about this stoppage too. Keep getting emails about it. Why does only that 1 lock need closing if the river levels are low from lack of rain? If that was really the reason wouldn't more of the Stort need closing??

Heard rumours that a simillar reoccuring 1 lock stoppage at Standsted Abbots was more to do with water loss to side streams/fishery ponds and EA slices not set correctly...so possibly out of CRTs control?
