I just came across this item on the YBW website:_ http://www.ybw.com/news-from-yachting-boating-world/deadline-looms-for-surveys-on-diy-use-of-antifouling-paints-15383 It appears that H&S 'fears' may want to make it impossible for folks to do their own blacking. I haven't read it in detail so don't flame me if I've got it wrong. There's a petition in progress, so sign up if you agree.
  2. Does anyone know what chlorinated rubber blacking paint is? Does anyone use it? I've found it very difficult to find any information on this, though I've been told its better than anything and takes years before the hull needs blacking again.
  3. Having recently gone through a bit of a nightmare with a British Marine Federation Member Marina in Cheshire, where my boat was allowed to sink after they relaunched it holed after grit blasting and epoxy blacking, and having unsuccessfully explored all avenues to claim compensation for uninsured losses due to cost, I turned to the BMF for possible assistance, if only to make others aware of what happened here. Leaving aside the financial loss above, when my insurer, Craftinsure, (although it was their underwriters N&G who were dealing with me), had settled my claim, and had reclaimed their own costs of that claim from the marina's insurer who had eventually accepted full liability for what their insured had done, and the legal process funded by legal expenses insurance had concluded without a result, due to the marina's insurer deciding they would deal independently with my own, leaving the law company out of the equation, the marina decided they would like to go one step further. Before they would release my boat so I could sell it off to the trade, they insisted they would charge me storage charges for the time the boat lay on hard standing as a result of their actions while we sorted out the consequences of sinking - over £500, as well as insisting on full payment for their "job", for which I now held a surveyor's report stating it was sub-standard and poor. The total I had to pay, after all this damage during routine work, was around £2,500! Or I couldn't regain possession of my boat. Remember - their insurer had already accepted full liability. The BMF operates both a mediation service for such disputes between customers and member companies. In my case that consisted of contacting the marina for their side of the story, which was they had "complied" with all the BMF codes of practice - which I had evidence to show they certainly hadn't. Initially the BMF accepted that and told me there was nothing more they could do. A two step mediation process! I objected, thanked them, and said I would make their decision known to the boating community. They then immediately requested my survey report, the offending invoices for storage charges, and the original written quote from the marina, at which they re-contacted the marina, and asked me to refrain from writing here until they had further investigated. After a few more days the BMF then replied to me that the marina had consented to "improve their practices for the future", and that was the end of that. No further mediation, no BMF committee decision on the actions of the marina, who are still free to operate behind the BMF logo, and certainly no recompense for us, who have probably lost in the region of £20,000 as a result of what went wrong here. The BMF concluded that was a "positive result". The BMF Codes of Practice for member companies can be found here for reference: http://britishmarine.co.uk/Our-Members/Why-Choose-a-BMF-Member My own thoughts are that if a case such as mine cannot stir the BMF into action - I hold all documentary evidence and believe I have been wronged, although legal action can't be considered due to extreme cost, then there surely could be no circumstances where they might be useful to consumers such as me. They stated in their final email to me that they had no regulatory powers and were simply a trade association, which of course they are, funded and supported by trade member companies. What then is the point of their codes of practice? In that case what use would they ever be to a consumer, and could they ever provide "protection" to a consumer if things go wrong when using a member company?
  4. This is our second used boat, but the first we have kept long enough to have the hull blacked on. There seems to be some debate about blacking the bottom plate on Narrowboats. Some say, because it's always immersed it doesn't rust nearly as much as at the waterline on the sides and therefore doesn't require blacking. Also that it's very easy to rub the plate along the bottom of most canals and the blacking would be scraped off anyway. She is 17 years old now and been looked after quite well, prior to us, and I want to carry on with the good care. I'll be doing the blacking myself and would appreciate any thoughts. Cheers.
  5. I'm sorry if this has been done before. Just wondered how often you re-black your boat and your reasoning behind the interval. I've got a Les Allen which was re-blacked 3 years ago. The hull had a survey at that time and had negligible pitting or wear despite being 22 years old at the time. She's obviously been well looked after. I've heard a couple of people say it's a waste of time and money to do it at all, others prefer to have it done after 2 years. My understanding is that there are factors which contribute to the degrading of the hull thickness and pitting. 1) Use of electric shore lines (I don't) 2) Amount of time stood still (we cruise a lot) 3) Type of paint used ...I'm sure there are other factors but is it true that the only bit which is at risk is the water line where the hull goes in and out of the water? Any thoughts gratefully received....
  6. Hi Everyone, hope you're all well. Just a little information. We have a little Dry Dock availability for the end of October at the moment if any body needs it. Also note. Dock is clean and dry (no mud) and has had some electrical upgrades lately including more 16 amp power points and complete surrounding gunwale level lighting with 24 spot lamps. Recommended by boat Surveyor Mike Carter who uses it often for historic boats and others. Sorry no Blasting here Dry dock - blacking - self hire - all services 01606 832 460
  7. We've bought a 25' narrowboat which has been recently blacked other than the bottom plate which has been left bare steel. The surveyor says it should be blacked and in any case would like to put the boat ashore for the winter. Presumably it will need blacking as it will otherwise rust in the open air. The problem is the weather- it's either wet and cold or just cold or wet! Does anyone have any ideas either something temporary for winter or blacking that can be put on sub 5deg temperatures
  8. My boat (launched late 2007) came out of the water in the Stoke Bruerne area this morning and I have been down to look at it. This is the third backing of its life - the first one being delayed by Basingstoke issues with the Deepcut flight. Anodes are fine, no pitting but bubbles of blacking, with water in the bubble behind the blacking, below the waterline on both sides. I have always moored it the same way round, in the same place, and it has a galvanic isolator. It seems, from experience and advice I have received that the blacking on the Thames (Laleham Reach) was only one coat (paid for two - three if it dried quickly) and that it either went on before the boat was thoroughly dried or the boat went back in the water before the blacking was dry. Luckily no damage done at all but it seems as if the boatyard I used slightly more than two years ago wasn't as honest as I was lead to believe. I did go and look at it when it was first out of the water to check myself for anode degradation and pitting (none then either) but when I went back to collect it it was back in the water and I am not sure how I would have detected the fact that only one coat (apparently) was applied. I suppose it just shows that having the boat out of the water regularly (two-yearly seems about right to me) is no bad thing and part of the responsibilities of owning a boat. I am disappointed that what I trusted the firm on the Thames to do clearly wasn't done to the standard and specification we agreed.
