  1. Hi Janet yeah, that was longer than 8 hours in all but I only record engine running hours per the hour-o-meter. We had the engine off for weed hatchery and also tea breaks (and when we were in the pub). At the time i thought it was the longest day but on checking the log 16August just pipped it
  2. Try looking in the control panel which is probably an option when you click the green start button (do you have xp?) Then you may have an option called 'performance and maintenance' and 'power options' is under that. Thats where it is on mine but yours may be different - just have a hunt around in the control pannel options. Or just found another way - right click on the battery icon (bottom right) and see what you get - mine has 'adjust power properties' as an option My computer also has a speed/stamina switch (actually a switch you manually change) but i dont know if an acer will have one of those but it's worth looking for.
  3. Glad i caught you to wave at before you went. Was going to move over to use your lecky point but the pound i put in mine yesterday morning is not even half gone yet. Wish I had though - got woken up at half two this morning by some drunk chap standing on the dockside (about 15 foot away from my window) bellowing. And not just random bellowing either, he seemed to be having a rant at my boat (or perhaps me inside). tosser
  4. Ah Hemmel; locks, locks then for a change some more locks Enjoy the trip
  5. I think you're confusing stupidity with ignorance. Nothing wrong with ignorance cos you're attempting to rectify it with this thread. I dont understand why you can charge it via the inverter when the engine is off but not when it's running - hopefully someone else will advise I dont know about lappy battry knackering either but I've been using mine till the battry runs out for the last 3 months and haven't noticed a deterioration in performance. in the meantime: Go to Maplins and get a gizmo - it'll take less battry juice to charge the lappy. They come with in car cigarette lighter plugs - does the boat have a cigarette lighter socket thingy? if not you can get lighter to 12v plug things. Charge the lappy when you're not using it (but you worked this bit out already) scuse spelling
  6. Are you charging the laptop via an inverter? My understanding of elctrickery is minimal but i think you're taking 12v ramping it up to 240 with the inverter and then that heavy box on the lappy lead is converting it down to 19v (or 16v or whatever it needs) You can get magic gizmos from Maplins that take the 12v and turn it into 19v (or 16 etc) which is much more efficient I'll try and find a pic of what i mean Edited to say: like one of these http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=44736 But take the laptop lead in - it'll say on the box bit what voltage you need so just get the one that has the right voltage (or question the shop assistant)

  8. How exciting! Have a good trip
  9. The elfin safety accident page of my logbook has enough entries already thanks I remember that stretch coming up had to go all the way to Riley Green before I could moor Nooooo! watch the boat like a hawk in the locks, you're not on a hireboat now
  10. You bring up some interesting things here. I find it easier and easier to drop that kind of stuff nowadays. And waiting for locks, well... what can you do but wait & be cheery maybe have a chat. Boating is good for spiritual practice. I just draw the curtains before casting off.
  11. Indeed - Map B looks like a cheap beaded necklace dropped by a surly child You could do Rodley to Skipton - you may meet a trapped CCer single handing up and down waiting for another boat by an electric swing bridge
  12. cheeky monkey! I have 3 mooring pins, 2 that came with the boat & 1 i purchased cos i thought i should have a spare. This was between bridges 64 & 65 south of Adlington where i had already attempted to moor but the ground was too hard to bang the pins in. Or perhaps my puny girl arms were just too weak and i should get a bigger hammer There's a 4am? Plenty of time to ponder can be a very good thing though
  13. I'll give you a wave when i pass. Unexcitingly, admin (since i am 'between work' i'm helping a mate with her business) 15 hrs! I think 8 1/2 is my longest day (Stoke Bruene to Buckby top) I do sing to myself when I get lonely & tired though. And once i composed a poem in my head called 'praying for piling'
  14. thas my boat! great pic Do give us a shout if you pass by again & I'm in although i'll be out working again tomorrow day it was good to meet you on the way. I dind't tell you I was going to Leeds to join the circus did I? where be the Grove pub? i like a bit of folk if the fiddles aren't too manic Sorry - was out all day only been back an hour - this work lark is tiring. I'll try and catch you before you leave, even if it's just sticking me head out the swan hatch to wave You mean the non-linear pontoons? I got some lecky cards today but carnt be arsed to connect up my landline & charger in the dark
  15. Hi John, I'm off out shortly to see i BW mind me overstaying until the weekend & to see someone about work but I'll be back later ha ha. I dont do to many hours in a day, I'm by myself so it gets a bit tiring... I had 10 days diversion on the ashby and 3 5 day stops plus several non moving chore days. I'll check the log later to see how many actual travelling hours it took me - twice as long as the canalplan i reckon
  16. I shut them behind me
  17. Thanks all I have just been dragged out for tapas & more beer so i am a bit tired and emotional lol - I'm no Alan Fincher! I'm sure we will yeah, River lock was fun I'm glad i had crew for the last day though. Coming through the bridges on the big wide river & then turning into Clarence Dock was awsome. I'll be back & forth between Rodley & Skipton for a while...
  18. "Total distance is 346.10 miles and 261 locks. There are at least 43 moveable bridges of which 4 are usually left open; 45 small aqueducts or underbridges; 8 tunnels and 1 major aqueduct." On 28 July I set off from Brentford, I am now in Clarence Dock drinking a beer Thank you all for your company and advice
  19. Are you sure it's not accessible? eg my pump is hidden under a false floor in the bathroom cabinet. WHen i had your problem it was just a filter (next to the pump) that needed cleaning.
  20. Whichever side is the most sensible given the conditions, position of other boats etc But signal to let him know which side you intend to pass
  21. Hi Matt, I've been a liveaboard CCer for almost 4 months now and have made my way from London to almostLeeds single handed. I have had several hire holidays in the past. I'll post more later (I'm expecting company shortly) but if you want to talk about danger & safety and perhaps the different attitudes of boat owners to hire boaters I'll be more than happy to talk to you. I think my attitudes to danger & safety have changed considerably on the journey. If you PM me a mobile number i'll get in touch.
  22. It's just 3 leads in series plugging into each other. One came with the dongle & the other 2 came with USB memory sticks i think. i.e. they're nothing special.
  23. ah, mines the flash drive type. Interestingly a reboot has sorted the connection dropping (with all other variables unchanged) so i suspect it's the dongle software fighting something else for a component. Or an update requiring, but not instructing, a reboot. I dont use any antennas either - just hangs in the porthole with 3 bog standard USB leads.
  24. Can you open the dongles to take the sim out? I've not tried that. I think sometimes the computer gets an update for something (AVG? windows?) which knocks the 'redial if signal is dropped' setting off so I do a reboot & try and find the setting & change it back but I dont know if this is the cause or not. Hard to diagnose when I'm moving about as well. It's doing it now so I shall try rebooting..
  25. I dont really mind the manual ones & can manage with a bit of clambering and hauling but I dont think it's possible to do the mechanised ones without enlisting the help of passers by; I dont dare tie the boat to them without knowing how they're going to open. We shall see how i get on with the Dobsons lock one today... Heading for Leeds then will turn round & spend the winter between Rodley & Skipton.
