  1. tee hee I think you could be right, bless its cotton little socks. Gibbo, thanks for the reply. I have a digital volt meter which I cross checked against my multi-meter. It has got me puzzled. I must point out that my batteries are, nearing the end of their life. I dont know if this is relevent. Tom
  2. Thanks for that. Will try your suggestion. Its not bothering me too much (14.63v is better than the 14.23v I was getting before the mod), its just the curiosity of the 3 different devices coming up with the same number. Many thanks Tom
  3. Hi Tony thanks for the reply. I did actually go for the 100 ohm in series with the pot. Turning the pot fully one way gives me 14.63 volts. Turning it fully the other way and the alternator shuts down. I had thought of trying a different resistor but, not being electronically minded, was reluctant to do so. Your advice has given me more confidence to experiment a little. Thanks However, all this does'nt explain why my charger and PAR, when I had it fitted, both gave the same results. Tom
  4. Hi could someone help. This is not a problem as such, more a phenomenon. I recently found a thread, on the forum, that asserted that Freedom sealed wet lead/calcium batteries can be charged to 14.8 volts. I also found another thread that explained how to get my a127 alternator up to 14.8 volts, using a tractor regulator. So, I sent off for the regulator, and resistors, and connected it all up. Lo and behold, after charging for some time, the voltage reached 14.63 and refused to go any higher. Now, going back a few years, I bought a Sterling 3 stage charger. Also, about the same time, I fitted a Sterling PAR to my, then, 55 amp 127. All seemed to be going well until, about a year ago, both the charger and the PAR stopped going above, yes you guessed it, 14.63 volts! Can anyone explain this? Many thanks for any explanations Tom
  5. Thanks for that. Theres another post running tonight, all about calibrating, so I'l ask on there about how to do it.
  6. Hi I was just wondering, if you put a smaller pulley, on the alternator, would that not put the tacho out? Mine is run off the alternator.
  7. Hi could you tell me where watts fits into the water analogy

  9. Thanks for that Alan, I still feel a bit of a dumb a**e for not mentioning it sooner. The boat I saw was heading up as we were going down, thats why I cant describe it. Tom
  10. Thanks for that Alan but this boat was called Que Sera Sera. That is the only reason I mentioned it. I did'nt know about the loss at the time, else I could have done something. edit:ps I doubt if I could describe the boat I saw, its just the name. Plus I remember thinking "what i lovely looking boat". The song was in my head for a cuppla hours. Any idea how many boats of that name there are? Tom
  11. Help...I feel so b****y stupid. I saw this boat, or one that looked very like the picky, heading up the Lee. This was sometime between 17 May and 22 May. What do I do about it? regards Tom

  14. Hi I agree with Arnot "it is a process fraught with risk" but, if you are CAREFULL it can be done. On my SR2 (in a previous life), the "pots" had a chamfer at the bottom that helped the rings to ease into the pot. With a friend holding the pot, and using 2 pieces of stick to squeeze the ring closed, I managed it. I re-iterate Arnots point though - BE VERY CAREFUL. Good luck Tom

  20. Not exactly off topic but, on our 5 yrs of CCing, we have noticed many boats on online moorings not displaying mooring licenses. Whats that about ? Tom
  21. hi all im Tom as you can see from the last 2 posts im not good at this. Mine is a thornycroft K4D also. 3 months after we bought the boat it blew a piston. It cost about 450 squids (with me doing the work ). 10 months later its going strong, no probs.
