  2. We have a boatman stove Great little stove We have ours on all the time Before you think about calling it a night, all the coals are red, top up with lots of coal( called banking the fire) turn the air knob at the front to close, open again maybe. Turn, you will find you fire till going followin morning, nice and toasty. Dig around with poker getting rid of the ash, open up the knob again. You can have the fire on non stop, the trick is not let the old red coals disappear,or get too low, look after it and it will look after you. If you let the fire get too low put wood on it ,open the knob, and as soon as poss get the coal on it. Re the black glass, I think this gets like this if you have the knob on the front closed, wind it out a bit, improving air flow Col Why is it we all know the stove is bloody hot Yet we still have ago at using a quick jerk of the finger to open or close the door, because we arnt going to use the poker that's sitting by the log burner. Or am I the only sad muppet to keep up with this evening mission Lol Or is this the brandy Col
  3. Lol Phylis Yes your right, Theirs me feeling down, thinking about the negatives You come back with the positives. I've just got to do it, get out their, got the weed hatch now, no excuses Hat of to you, for making me smile Col
  4. Finding it a lot more challenging with a wheel on our boat, I think it's the low low speeds, I also bought a helm indicator, which helps Always having boats down the coast, then a tiller on the canal, thought that once having a wheel again would not be a problem. Takes a bit of getting use to, Instead of standing on the back with my arse on the tiller having all the time in the world I'm inside the wheel house with a spinning wheel One thing I've got to get use to is being inside the wheel house, where you do feel cut of from what's happening outside Col
  5. Easy peasey Take a copy of this thread complete, and attaché the whole lot on return of the court sumons only (not his letter) Then get info for the adverts and the advertising body that has stop advertising his Marina Then you take his letter to you telling you to vacate Take copy of the services he advertised you would get Take photos of services or non services you had Defend your self it comes across better, and solicitors won't have the same passion, although none of this will matter as all the evidence is there in paper and pics Even counter sue for all your monies back on the same summons all breach of contract Simples you will win Col
  6. Blimey Chertsey Me writing a clear and comprehensible post,! I must be improving then!! Just shown the misis your post, she's always pointing out my short comings Col
  7. Hi I'm not sure it be a relief or not What will they do, or where will they go, will they be able to stay, and theirs monies paid are gone, lost!!. If it gets taken over, old mooring contracts may not be honored Col
  8. Sebrof how can you say that?? Quickest way to upset and stop folks contributing.!! I my self realise most of my posts have bad spelling and bad grammar, I find it difficult to concentrate on writing because of the strong prescribed drugs I'm on,having peripheral neuropathy, numbness and tingling caused by chemo, combined with the meds make it hard to concentrate, but being a member of this forum I enjoy contributing. Don't help using a IPad either Other folks may have learning dificultys, or rumatisium, or just lazy but its a forum that is helpful and welcoming to everyone isn't it?? Bux :D Fleabay. Sounds good anyway Col
  9. Hang on!! I was first Col
  10. To charge £50 per hour ,estimated 5/6 hours to fit a boiler is a rip off!! Again twice in the last 3 months I've had to have a boiler fitted including flue, and making a hole in the roof £180 fitted by a bonafide business, the only other quote I had £520 all in Inc a new boiler Inc VAT But I buy new from flea bay for a lot cheaper Col
  11. Totally agree with Bizzard Lots of folks like that around here in our boat yard Charge £500 £ 600 pound to fit a boiler in a 6 hours. Then do bugger all for the rest of the week, because they eating for somone else to rip off Frigate captain thanks for making me spill my coffee So eloquently put Col
  12. Hi Keith So let's get this right you have £2000 per year for public liability and van insurance etc Accountant fees and book keeping really is a small percentage that runs with income going up and down with turnover And you need to earn £24,000 per annum before you make a profit!! Equaling £2000 per month You must be doing very well, van lease hire, totally tax deductible?? I do appreciate running your own business, I have for many years Any small business in this climate must be finding it hard But £50 per hour working from a van and then to suggest up to 6 hours to fit a boiler, I wonder how much of that time is doing nothing talking eating drinking tea going for a wonder around the boat yard,on his phone to other people I've seen it all I am fumoxed how when a trades men comes in has 20 mins drinking our tea,the the missis makes a sandwich, another 20 mins talking about his boat and then once job is finished he bills me for a extra hour for drinking eating phoning, and talking, but not a lot of working The old saying. turn over equals vanity Profit equals sanity All the best Col
  13. It's funny when you have a job to do Get a quote for the complete job Then ask for a daily rate, then the job gos on and on on and on You never win, Bux ! Ask around for a price for the complete job Mates rates sometimes even worse!! Good luck anyway get a few quotes, tell them youve had quotes,if they ask what's the cheapest tell them deducting £50 Everyone is out to make money that's life, fight back. Last week I had to cut holes for 5 lights and 2 windows in 5mm steel, I had a guy around who said it would take best part of a day, he charges £120 per day I done it myself with a grinder jigsaw and a hole cutter took me a morning , and I'm slow!!! Inc tea coffee and a bacon sarnie and what us men do best talking and moaning Col
  14. Yes but to quote £50 an hour then suggest that it could take up to 6 hours that's £300 to fit a boiler. Or am I wrong and he's completely instaling the gas ,and instaling a complete fresh system?? Col
  15. That sounds a rip off !! I've had 2 boilers fitted, 1 very recent change over a palomo boiler and had a morco fitted which had to have new flue fitted etc and re route gas and water conections. All done by Andy Plaster who is a gas fitter, surveyor proper business. He charges £160 that's with a gas safety certificate. He also does boat safetys his based in the bucks and beds area. Very professional and experienced I know he does go to London to do surveys and gas installations col
  16. Re Albions post re having seen anodes fizz Having a chat with the owner of once a fizzing boat at the bow and stern before he fitted a GI, and now it don't make bubbles anymore Thanks to Albions post we've realised his anodes are mounted right at the bow and right on the stern, so it shows that the anodes were doing their job it wasn't the hull but the anodes! Because if they weren't there, then it would have been his hull surely?? Which equals hull corrosion!! Col
  17. Why don't somone do a simple test with a meter With a meter put one end on you boat and the other on a metal ring or cleat A). without shore power With shore power connected C). With shore power connected with GI connected At willowbidge marina perhaps 20 boats online moorings all plugged in, the test above that was done to 3 boats was alarming And yes one boat seemed to fizzing very small bubbles when connected at his bow and stern, when disconnected nothing!! This is what started it all, and why some of us bought GI Why is it that narrow boats require welding in their lives, especially around the waterline GRP boats have anodes on them on the stern gear, and if no anodes the outdrives, stern gear, gets eaten away, fact! Be nice for somone do the simple test with a mtr and the proof will be in the pudding so to speak Col.

  21. Hi there I'm trying to find out how much a tow will cost and who or a company provides this service The boat is a 30 ft boat 8th beam at the moment in bath Marina, and needs to be towed to Bristol Marina. My Soninlaw needs the boat up here in miltonkeynes, and he buying the boat from bath Marina, which does not have a crane, but a slipway, but unless I'm wrong Being 4/5 ton there's not a company that will trailer it is there?? So is the only option a tow from bath to Bristol or can it be slipped and trailered?? Col
  22. I love Cosgrove, lots of geese there. Quite and peacefull Billing is excellent value for money, and Colin there is a star, and really does put himself out. My Soninlaw Kris use to do lots of work there on folks engines. Billing would have been our first home, although theirs a couple of wide beams there, you cannot travel onto the GU unless you have a narrow boat. Are the moorings their still Inc of electric?? Have a good break Col
  23. I remember when taking in our cars to the MOT station, and seeing them using hammers, and pointy ones too !! I started to have to use stronger mix of cement in the cills and wings lol. Waiting for the crap we put on, to fall off lol Those were the days you undersealed your car, to hide the fact is held together with sticky back plastic Forgot to add I wonder if similar things are done to boats these days,or days gone past ? Col
