My old Dad used to take grain from Goole to Gainsborough and beyond. He also took steel and other stuff on the Barges he worked on down to Nottingham. On one of the barges that his Uncle owned he slept in the hold as it had no wheelhouse, the other with a wheelhouse he slept on a bedroll placed under the bench seat in the wheelhouse even survived without Wi Fi He worked the boats from 1934 until 1939 when he like many others went to sea all during WW2.
