  1. I find the whole subject of moorings and finding a residential mooring so frustrating....many marina's advertise as non-residential though allow 'some' full-time liveaboards....BW seem like a bunch of ar**s (collective noun?) and have proved that they only wish to sell their ar*e to the highest bidder. I'm faced with the chicken and the egg conundrum plus a bloody long commute to work at this rate.
  2. Hi Tom - hope you didn't mind the placing of a link (might mean more 'academic' work for you!)....but your sister twisted me arm!
  3. that was super observant carl, and quick off the mark! my excuse: its early on a Sunday morning, the Archers had my attention and I'm nursing a hang over from the sloe gin consumed last night
  4. I'm posting this link on behalf of a friends brother doing research for his masters degree at Bristol. I'm sure he'd appreciate the input of anyone willing to complete his online survey....any questions; please respond to Thomas - his email is posted at the end of the survey. Note: Apart from posting this thread I have had no input with the compilation of this survey and am unable to respond to questions relating to it's content. Thank you doh! forgot the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=31qk...bXv5x3JOw_3d_3d
  5. bon voyage Fortunata - will view your library postings with envy - enjoy your adventure.
  6. ...this chap finds colour difficult - I love the look of a new sailaway dressed in grey primer - .....boring I know! edit: although I did see a nb on the Thames last summer that ticked my box.....dark green minimalist paint job with gothic lettering in black (of course) - also flew the jolly roger (as I imagine most of you do??) - anyone know that nb as I fail to recall it's name. Fairs fair not everybodies cup of tea...
  7. all good for me - this resurrection has helped on a number of fronts and posed further thoughts on others - yes i try searching the forum, though for convenience i click 'view new posts' when checking in and find little treasures like this thread....(above) the question of moorings confuse me somewhat - i am not yet on a nb - bw were of no help when asking for advice and info regarding my local area (Oxford) - I too am in the difficult position (as I'm sure many of you are) of having to hold the 9-5 down and without gaining a residential mooring find the thought of a liveaboard hard to reconcile with the job. The 'address' details were informative to.... signed: a newbie
  8. Ally - nice one on funding your Tug! Will follow your threads with a weavers eye....funnily enough I was sitting in nbAslan today - I now believe it's under offer! (by another party- must of liked the pink? ) Have Fun - pictures please.
  9. could be fun - as currently land locked with no nb friends edit: anyone using 'Pidgin' on a linux system - having never done IRC (?) had a go setting up the aforementioned with Marc's address-thingy didn't quite work! edit 2: got there using a Gnome 'xchat' - but no one answered back - hahahaha
  10. as an alternative to expensive Brompton' try Dahon: http://www.dahon.com/ 2 Tim's I know ride them....spooky (as neither knows the other!!)
  11. update: local library supplied the following - Booth, Graham 'The Narrowboat Builder's Book' 3rd ed (1999) isbn 1870002717 not enjoying the general design of this book - a little too busy with unclear illustration and poor reference between pics and text - as for content hard to assess as I am not putting theory into practice quite yet! Billingham, Nick 'Narrow Boats (sic): Care and Maintenance' (2003) isbn 1852238615 proved much better for me to 'zip' through - enabled me with 'nb' terminology and a better orientation of things 'technical'. Thanks: end of thread?
  12. fine billyb if you're happy with the cruising too breakdown ratio of 1:1......I've a couple of friends who love their bus's dearly but have found very deep pockets useful!
  13. thanking ye all for the prompt responses - carlt::ta for link to the book and et al for reviews - [non]recommendations mean more! - will check me local library for that. Mac Man::ta will peruse said sight with interest! & it's great to hear/read from your collective god-like experiences....one and all! edit: you'll know site when sighted!
  14. Hi - I'm a newbie interested in finding out more 'stuff' regarding the fitting out of a narrowboat to one's own taste. I have found some great webpages/sites/blogs showing owners projects though wonder if you might recommend me any working titles (books - as I dip into the mags already) available along the lines of the 'haynes' manuals for cars. Technical know-how in plain speak. I guess if I were to be more specific topics I'm interested in would be electrics/plumming/fixtures. At the moment I want to gem up a little - before testing out any (un)natural aptitudes! I'm in an unfortunate position of not owning a nb (yet), but will continue to page through this splendid forum more...
