  1. Hi. Wife and I are off to Napton narrowboats to have a look over Cannes on Saturday, anyone like to give me their thoughts, please? http://www.abnb.co.uk/boat_pages/2323web/2323abnb.php?BoatID=2323

  4. Well done you, good luck with the business. Only thing I would say is WEAR EAR DEFENDERS ! As someone who has tinitus ringing in their ears 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, I wish I had when I was younger, working in a noisy workshop. I'm on a self imposed mission to try to convince others to not make the mistake I made. Made lots of other mistakes too, but that would need a book !
  5. Aahhh! ........ de - fault lies with me then.
  6. Wow, that's weird! "TV licence" just gave me this thread, again, so I says to meself, that's weird, I sez and I does it again and it gives me three or four pages of the darn things!
  7. Thanks John, I did try a search first before asking. I'll have to learn how to do it properly, it just threw up one thread talking about BW licences. Edit. Just tried and all it brought up was this thread!
  8. I suppose the same applies to all boat users but, as soon to be continuous cruisers, the wife has just asked what arrangements we have to make and I have no idea!
  9. We thought the solid roof panel on the cratch of Ethel May by Bluewater Boats was a great idea (for us) and I was amazed by how much extra space the squarish stern on Snailspace by MGM gave.
  10. Hi, sorry to be pedantic but the author of The Crystal Singers series was Anne McCaffrey, not McArthur. Try her Dragon Series about the world of Pern, The White Dragon was probably the best, but it might be more enjoyable to read them in the recommended order (just google it). I love her work and have read every book she's written at least twice. Sad but true.
  11. OK, thanks guys, that's settled then, it will be a 60 footer. I was edging towards a cruiser stern, but will carefully consider what has been said about spillage.
  12. I'm sorry, I know this is has been covered before, but can someone who's actually done it confirm for me that I can take a 62 foot long narrowboat everywhere and anywhere on the system that a 60 footer will go? As future CC'ers all the internal space possible will be a good thing.
  13. I believe the answer to that is yes. I'm sure I've read there is compulsory national service, certainly for the blokes and at the end of their time everyone takes home their service rifle and a limited amount of ammunition! Edited for speeling.
  14. In case anyone is thinking it, yes, I did think about 60' motor and butty, but moving on and off the boats won't be easy for him.
  15. And without wishing to stir a hornets' nest, would that limited range in the South qualify under continous crusing guidelines?
  16. Thanks all, for the replies. Our plans have changed as in we need to take an elderly, infirm relative with us, and there are concerns about personal space. Although not ideal (from the original thoughts of cruising the entire network) at least it would get us afloat and we could change boats if/when circumstances changed. How long is a piece of string, I know but what would folks see as the best compromise of width / length for the Sothern option? The wife and I are in our late fifties and the relative is mid eighties. He wants his own bedroom and loo, but will happily share showering and living space (no not the shower at the same time!) and I think it would be good if it's a cruiser stern to be more sociable.
  17. I seem to re-call reading that the North can't be accessed from the South (and vis versa) but how much of the South can be travelled on a widebeam, please? Will the dimensions of the boat further restrict the range, say for instance if I went for a 70 footer. I will happily research this for myself if someone can point me in the right direction! Thanks in anticipation.
  18. It's lovely! http://rugbyboats.co.uk/brochure_pdfs/1133_e.pdf
  19. Many years ago (in the 1950's), my in-laws (with my wife as a five year old) were on a hire-boat (Water Vole out of Gas Street Basin - a converted working boat)and on entering a lock, the mother-in-law who was steering, held back too close to the bottom gates and the blade of the rudder was trapped between them as they were closed. The bow went up in the air as the lock filled and the water lapped over the stern. They only just sorted it out in time! Just read this out to the wife and she says it goes no-where close to describing the pandimonium that occurred as her father, opening the paddles, couldn't hear her mother shouting over the sound of the rushing water. "Rodney, Rodney, get the children off the boat, we're sinking!"
  20. >>> spacebar. I've read thru' this thread, and the "tasty" one before it was locked and IMO the score is Dave 25, Spacebar nil. You just keep digging a bigger hole for yourself! Every retort is weaker than the previous one and you are painting yourself as a very unpleasant individual.
  21. If you're going "into journalism" you'll need to tighten up on your typos
  22. Shouldn't that be "middle of the cut"? Can I lay claim to that term? Will people still be using that term in years to come? Will I have found fame at last?
