  1. Just used this kit myself this weekend. Works very well
  2. By old mains cable do you mean twin and earth type cable? Would not the copper cores cause a problem with it being a different metal to the steel base plate? What about using plastic fencing, the type in rolls from b and q, comes in a roll, no metal in it, square or hexagonal square section ?
  3. Just about to start laying concrete brick ballast into a new narrowboat hull. The floor has already been painted with Comastick type paint, (blacking) I think, is it necessary to put roofing felt down first as well?. As far as I can see from searching some people put felt, others just nothing. Opinions please Nick
  4. I have seen the plug cutters before but I thought they were only used for solid wood? This is 9mm and 6 mm faced ply. Surely they must be pinned in the middle of the board as well as under the trims? Thanks for all the suggestions Nick
  5. Hi all just about to start my fit out to a new shell. Wood battens on, insulation sprayed. Ideas needed for fixing back 9mm faced ply to the walls and 6 mm same to ceiling. It will be screwed and have strips over the joints etc but how do you fix through the decorative finish without fixing showing? Glue, foam, secret fixing, ant ideas please. Thanks. Nick
  6. Yes I saw that iso 12217. Yes new shell arrives next Saturday Just prepping calcs etc so I can do the build to RCD spec Nick
  7. Thanks for that found them both that will help me. Nick
  8. Thanks for that. Yes it was the DC side I was asking about. Auto cable seems quite expensive but I can get 6491x and tri rated cable at good discounts so is more attractive to me. Tri rated seems to exceed the standard so I may use this.
  9. Hi All I know when wiring a narrowboat that cables must be stranded and not single solid cores. Does it have to be Tri rated cable or can stranded 6491X type cable be used. This is a single insulated type that is used in conduit installations by electricians? It is still stranded but is not as flexible as Tri rated which has more finer strands.?
  10. I assumed the marinised bits were vetus??
  11. Could be i suppose but the warranty must cover all the parts on the engine including the vetus bits?
  12. I know nothing of Vetus equipment but, we are thinking of using there engine in our new build narrowboat. If there gear is crap, how can they afford to give a 5 year warranty on an engine. Thanks for any replies.
  13. We used to use it for general wiring in houses in the 80,s when copper was mega money. It was called COPPERCLAD (Obviously) if you put a kink in it and tried to straighten it then it could easily snap. It was only used for a short while then.

  15. We were moored on the Coventry canal a few years ago, middle of the day sheltering from the rain and wind, a trad narrowboat went past us with large dog on back, the steerer all wrapped up in his rainwear. Dog falls off the back into canal and the steerer did not spot it, the dog swam to the side, couldn't get out because of the piling. I ran down to drag the dog out, shouting at the guy to attract his attention. He did hear me eventually and they were reunited but it could have been very different.
  16. Just been on one of these in SINGAPORE 3 days ago, not quite the Thames B) In Bali now B)
  17. The charger is designed to be connected permanently to the 12v side so does not need to be disconnected. Nick
  18. Instant reply Cool, Yes i understand that but why would the maufacturer state the opposite.?? Nick
  19. Just bought a CTEC M 300 charger, now I have mains power at my mooring. The instructions for connection say, "Connect Red to Positive on battery terminal, connect negative to good metal ground away from battery.? Now this is fine & I am sure I can do this but WHY?? Why would it not say connect to the negative term of the battery?? These instruction are for Negative earth and for batteries in boats or vehicles. Your thoughts and views appreciated. Nick
  20. Thanks for the info Tony, yes of course it needs a return for the circuit to work, I understand that, the return is via the bolted connection of the alternator to the engine. Think I will abandon the self exciting alternator, not enough info available. It was only an option given to me by my supplier. I can get an 80A alternator and will stick with that. We have no mains charging at our mooring & it is a weekend/holiday boat only & my thoughts were, largest Alternator, quicker charging. Thanks for all the replies. Nickfryer
  21. I understand it IS self actuating and just has one large connection straight to the battery bank, nothing else. Thanks. Nickfryer
  22. Yes looked at that and others but that particular one would not fit mine. The type recommended to me by this supplier is well over £100.00 cheaper than that one. I do not want the cheapest just one that does the job. I had never heard of a. Self Exciting Alternator before?
  23. Engine is a. Bukh DV24. I do not want to change the pulley on the engine. There is no Tachometer fitted Was wondering if the V belt would take it, and if there any other problems in fitting this TYPE of alternator. I believe they are an American unit, supplied to a uk marine alternator supplier. Thanks
