  1. Hello, On a previous topic I made enquiries on how to obtain a CIN as part of self certififying RCD compliance. The answer in my case was to obtain a three letter MIC code from the BRITISH MARINE FOUNDATION (BMF=free!)) in order to complete the 14 digit CIN to ISO 10087.2006. I believe this number is to be stamped on the starbord side of the transom. (and secretly inside somewhere) Looking at other RCD compliant/ce plaqued boats on the marina I cant see this number , I presume you put it on the OUTSIDE ON THE TOP RUBBING RAIL perhaps?? Also I bought a set of 7mm metal punch stamps (albeit cheapo's from fleebay) which make little on no impression into the steelwork using a lump hammer. (the letters G and B have now also bounced into the depths of the canal !!) WHAT DO YOU USE TO MARK THE NUMBER ? Any feedback welcome Steve
  2. Thankyou Ally ...... yes I am thinking the boat is still a sailaway when it IS NOT ! ...... it is now a completed boat yeah? That now makes sense that a builder cannot apply an ISO standard CIN for a 'sailaway' because it is not finished to attain full RCD compliance, just the annex 3. Happy New Year :-)
  3. A big thank you for everybodys input. The 'boat number' on the annex 3 is definitely not a CIN. (not to ISO as required by RCD compliance anyway) I understood I had to apply to the RYA for a home build CIN ...... Which I have now done anyway (parted with £30) and I will see what happens. It does however state on the form; If a boat is offered for sale in A CONDITION THAT COULD BE USED then it is a professionally built boat and the RCD compliance is the responsibility of the builder who should use his own CIN number. This applies to "sail away" boats. In such cases an RYA CIN should not be used. Am I reading / interpreting it wrong ??
  4. Hello, I am In the process of putting together the paperwork, technical file, owners manual etc. to self certify RCD Compliance on my 57' 'sailaway' narrow boat which is now nearing completion. Most of this I have got my head around ....eventually ! but it fills in the winter nights :-) I am a little confused over the 'Craft Identification Number' (CIN) The sail away came with a 'Boat Number' (on the boat builders annex 3 declaration of conformity) but this isn't of the same format as a CIN should be (ISO 10087) of 14 characters. I also cant find this Number anywhere on the hull/ Stern I have also read that because I am declaring conformity to the RCD I must provide the CIN ... is this correct? I went to the RYA(Royal Yacht Association) website who provide CIN's for home built boats but state that a RYA No.shouldn't be used for sailaways After the first 2 country of origin digits in the CIN are a 3 digit manufactures code followed by the coding for year/month of manufacture. Is there a register of the 3 digit manufacturing codes used in the CIN ? Can I make up my own 3 digit manufacturing code ! or is there somewhere I can obtain one? Or is there somewhere else I can get a CIN? The more I 'Google' the more confused I become !! Any help appreciated ... Thanks Steve
  5. Thankyou for your replies. Good day out . Open day at Whixall ... what open day ? just a bloke sat in the office! (not even offered a cuppa) Good chat at Midway boats re new build, looked promising. Over priced stuff at Venitian (in my opinion) but VERY nice people. (if people want 40-50K for their boats why not tidy them. or have them tidied up !) Not much at tattenhall but nice marina. The search goes on ..........
  6. Hi, off to the BWML open day at whitchurch today (sunday) and then looking at boats for/with a cousin. (hefty budget) can anyone recommend boat sales in say a 30mile radius so we can make a day of it ? Thankyou in anticipation Steve
  7. Hi, thinking of buying the small BOATMAN stove (4kw), has anyone any experience with these stoves ... good or bad ? Any other suggestions for a small stove ..... it has to be small !
  8. I had the same problem. My sterling charger sometimes charges at nearly 15 volt (equalization ??) and I had a lot of LED lamp failures (yes they were from ebay/china but CE marked) I have put a 12 volt regulated supply (ensures constant 12v) to the lighting circuit and have had no failures since.
  9. Our story in brief. Hired boats for 20 years and loved it ! 3 offspring flown the nest. Fed up with the debt and trying to pay the bills. Sold house cheap to daughter (and grandkids) both parties well happy. Paid off the debts.(unbelievable feeling) Invested rest of money in a sail away and fitted it out exactly as we wanted it. Semi retired with marina mooring for 4 years now, with plenty of weeks out cruising. Absolutely BL**DY LOVE IT .... everything about it (that would be long list !) .... even emptying the poo cassettes My stomach still churns with excitement and a big smile on my face every time I drive home from work. Would we go back on land ........ not through choice ! Cant wait to reach retirement and be financial able to cruise the system and winter in a marina. (like a previous poster) (The only negative is not being able to have family and friends round in the winter for get togethers, but plenty of barbies in the summer )
  10. I am also experimenting with magnetic Perspex sheets. I sawed off the protruding part of the window hopper flush with the window surround. The Perspex fits over nicely and enough hopper is left to still hold the glazing in summer. The windows I have done get no condensation at all, the others can be wet through in the morning. The problem I have is the adhesive on the magnetic tape keeps falling off the frame and the Perspex. Where do get your magnetic strip from ?
  11. So I will measure different defined sections of the Hull under the water to determine volume and multiply by 1000 kg ..... simples !! The max people thing is interesting ...... and worrying ... I regularly have 8 people on my 57 foot narrow boat. It will be fun assembling all the family for this little test Thankyou for your replies Steve
  12. I am in the process of putting together an RCD 'type' owners manual for my narrowboat. (could be useful if I sell it in the furure ... and something to do on these long winter nights ! It requires the WEIGHT of the boat I am sure there must be some calculation by measuring its water displacement, could I measure the depth of the boat bow and stern and by some magic formula arrive at its weight?? and how do you arrive at a 'MAX RECOMMENDED NUMBER OF PERSONS ' number ? Any help appreciated, Steve
  13. Thankyou for your quick suggestions. Tattenhall looks promising. Looking forward to a day out around the marinas!
  14. Good evening, Can anyone suggest good secure marina moorings say within 20mile of chester. Taking a relation around tomorrow to look at some for a 57' narrowboat. Intends to occupy boat for 6 month periods. Have Chirk in mind to look at, and seems plenty around Nantwich but I am not familiar with these. All suggestions welcome Thanks Steve
  15. Hi, unless the TV has a external 240v ac to12v dc transformer/power pack you will not be able to run a modern flat screen TV from a 12v supply. Tv's have a 'switched mode power supply' arrangement (not a straight forward old type transformer) which produces various voltages of typically 5v, 12v and 30v. etc There are plenty of smaller flats screens that use an external power pack , but as mentioned before, make sure its 12v dc. I have run such a TV off a 12volt battery very successfully. Steve
  16. Geeeze I ask a simple question and get a 4 page reply .... I love this forum X
  17. Go for it ! ... If the boat is paid for ..... I think YES . A bit of savings for emergencies wouldn't go amiss though.
  18. Everybody has an opinion but ....... two narrowboats in a lock = contact sport ! I try and keep the cabin sides 'nice' anything below that and its not worth the stress. Patch up the scratches to stop the rust and a quick coat of paint around the gunnels every year. Having just done the chesterfield canal ..... don't take your 'shinny' boat up there....... without lots of Tcut :-)
  19. Hello, Planning for the distant future, changing narrowboat to widebeam ........ I have a dream !! Am I right in thinking the licence fee is the same per length and the width is irrelevant ? Cheers
  20. A big thankyou for your replies ... onwards to Barnby Dun ...... The Chinese better still be open !!
  21. Hi, does anyone know if a 57 foot narrow boat can be winded (turned round !) at BARNBY DUN on the River Don navigation . I want to drop down from the end of the Stainforth & Keadby navigation for the night and then turn round. No winding hole is shown in the area but the navigation may well be wide enough. Any help appreciated. Steve
  22. Sorry somehow I posted the thing before I had finished it! (But you've made me laugh) Still cant edit title
  23. We were going up the chesterfield canal on Thursday when the prop/gearbox seized , after removing a huge piece of carpet the whole lot remained solid. We were in the middle of nowhere so we decided to try and pull it to somewhere accessible. A few yards and it was pretty hopeless, the thick weed and reeds didn't help matters. Passing boats are like rocking horse manure on this canal. (one all week) Out of nowhere came a lad built like a brick toilet who took it upon himself to pull our 57 foot narrowboat a MILE to Whitsunday Pie Lock. I just kept pushing theboat out of the edge with the boat pole. Along the way he had the energy to tell us he used to be a rugby player, the story of the up coming lock and more interestingly how he used to be in charge of Standedge Tunnel. All this and he never broke sweat ! I was well knac***d. A BIG thank you to a BIG lad called TIM , it has rekindled my faith in human nature. All he would accept was a handshake. (P.S. after parting the prop shaft from the gearbox everything freed up and we are on our way again - what a lovely canal) Does anyone know how to edit the topic title !?
  24. seems a lot of building for the money. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-for-sale/property-42387332.html?premiumA=true
  25. Thankyou all for your replies, especially Cheshire rose !!
