  1. That'll be Clive Field I guess. A true stalwart of the trust.PM me if you visit here and I'll gladly show you some sights/pubs. Armitage Shanks and Curchward make valid points. I'll do some kicking after Xmas!
  2. Some great names there. What happened to the Racal empire? Yes I vaguely remember the Ferranti scandal, I was overseas at the time. But in the early 70s I was involved in a defence project to "prove" that once again Ferranti were pricing their components a little on the high side! Was that 6502 based? I was lucky enough to buy an AIM65 computer from work, taught myself assembler. A really elegant micro.
  3. Solartron, there's a blast from the past! Great Nixie tube displays.Trying to remember other test equipment companies: Keithley and HP which are still going. What others?
  4. I agree with the comments about CCT's web site. I have mentioned this once or twice in the appropriate ear; to be told that it was in hand but the appearance is still rather dull. I volunteer at Ham Mill lock where restoration is very close to completion, but a bank collapse will delay full opening. That's me in the photo on the right. IanM, that's a great idea about starting a thread!

  7. The Avon and Severn are popular as part of the "Avon ring", but that requires a narrow beam as part of the ring is narrow canal. There are some hire companies on the rivers, and one did operate on the G&S too. But I don't think I've ever seen a wide beam hire boat on those waterways. So I think it would be very restrictive; you probably wouldn't get a good return.

  12. As a Severn user I think the most important information is the river level and flow. The best source I've found is the Environment Agency's gauges. Ok, they don't tell you flow, only level, but the charts of level vs time do give you a good idea of flow. But the E A charts are a pig to find, so I put together a web page (http://www.rwilson.org.uk/severn.html) which shows the levels on the navigable part of the Severn. Also there are links to Farsons water cams. It would be useful to have Met office weather warnings and forecasts too!
  13. A brilliant rescue. Top marks to the F&R. I'm watching the levels as I have recently started with Glos & Worcs 4x4 Response (as a controller, not a driver). Looks like we may be on standby soon.

  15. Pinders at Stoke Prior (on the Worcs and Bham canal) did mine 3 or so years ago. Long established boat yard/builders. PM me if you want more info.
  16. If she is there, or in the area, I can recommend Gordon's Narrowboats, an experienced engineer. He changed my antifreeze this year.
  17. Hope your next step is a good one. We too are leaving the waterways, sadly.
  18. Slipway at Saul marina, 8 miles south of Gloucester. Also one at Lower Lode pub on the Severn, just below Tewkesbury. I think there is one at Apperley on the Severn too, not sure.
  19. A bit of a hitch: http://www.cotswoldcanals.com/pages/posts/lodgemore-lift-bridge-update-no.-3-806.php
  20. Hey MtB, I am working on a nearby lock restoration (Ham Mill). I really would like to see a boat through it in my lifetime - I'm 65! We live in hope.....
  21. FYI the bridge is called Hempsted, see https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Hempsted,+Gloucester+GL2/@51.8480255,-2.264302,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x487106302a9c66dd:0xacb8ffbec0854dc9
