  1. Updated blog with more photos from locals. https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/12/once-more-unto-the-breach/
  2. Canal has breached at Maghull on the stretch between Stanley Dock and Burscough, no locks so lots of water has been lost and sandbags being dumped in to try and ebb the flow https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/12/once-more-unto-the-breach/
  3. I dont know what you're all chuntering about, how many boats have a cabin specially for Batman?
  4. https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/11/surveying-the-kingdom/
  5. This was a Northwich, stempost caught, stern dropped only about 6 inches, me and the guy on the paddles realised/reacted quickly. Slid off as he dropped the paddles but unseated the rudder on the cill even though I had it hard over just in case.
  6. From personal experience its easy to catch something on the bottom gates heading downhill, at least in a narrow lock it is, even with the button up.
  7. ah I thought this was reference to the pound above being dry because of the breach.
  8. https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/07/pump-up-the-volume/ Updated blog with details of problems with Chasewater water supply and explanation of why it took them a few days to find the leak.
  9. Just had someone walk up to CW, definitely no flow out of there atm.
  10. I felt it had more of a feel of Allo Allo spytalk
  11. The three digits could be down to the A suffix used in early fleet numberings? Doesnt explain the rams head though.
  12. ?? I think Ive seen that version in Bradshaws..... East is down and dropping, west was rising but Im sure others will have a better idea on actual figures that side.
  13. Lovely job Ian. So sorry I missed this question first time round Alan, as far as I remembered it was aged brass coloured. There was no guard on it at all, something to give me nightmares these days but thought nothing of it as a 8/9 year old wandering round the running engine. It was a 3VSH but the hand start had been moved to the same end as the flywheel so the gear box could be fitted to the other end, this video suggests my memory was wrong and it was polished steel however. Same engine but ours had the fuel tank on the engine room wall and the rad was replaced with raw water cooling. Lovely sound.
  14. I tend to refer to it as North and South, it bends so much it could be referred to by every point of the compass lol. The Chasewater side is dropping slightly again, Staffs are conserving water for their Iron man contest this weekend so theres no water going into it, yesterday morning it was 5mm down on where it had recovered to so still about 4 inches down at least.
  15. Another update, some cracking pics again showing possibly the location of the leak as mentioned to me by Springy of this parish https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/06/the-case-of-the-missing-case/
  16. https://oldnblist.wordpress.com/2018/06/05/a-canal-without-water-is-just-a-muddy-ditch/ Not much to update, springy's photos aside.
  17. Tonights on the scene report says the valves are closed at Chasewater, looks like springy is not going anywhere for a while.
  18. Hope no one minds but I have now entered the above information in my website as well, if Grawar has the facilities to scan & email pics I am more than happy to post them here on his behalf.
  19. Thanks John, no idea why it isnt showing in their stoppages from the search bar for me.
  20. This is the inflow from Chasewater was running Fri/Sat/Sun for sure, someone is going to pop over later and check its still running.
  21. Not sure what the CRT guy is talking about but according to rangers/locals the Chasewater valves have been running since mid April and are still running now. CW is full according to those who have walked around it, easily up to the grassed areas and all boat ramps are usable. As springy has mentioned the level is rising to the section north of the dam and the only place water comes from to do that is Chasewater, I would suggest he is either pulling your leg or talking round his hat. Closing Rushall locks makes sense as it would take water out of the section that is already low, I would imagine they will reopen once the level is back to normal. Although theres no mention of any closure on CRT stoppages page.
  22. A few more photos on my blog here hoping to get some more later so it will be updated throughout the day.
  23. Some very good friends are in the area and taking the pics for me, next update will be tomorrow now, photographer will try and get as close to the action as possible. The engineer I mention is very clued in on this sort of thing and his insights have been invaluable.
  24. Its my blog, I mentioned the level being down on the OML came from someone on the OML, I was using it to illustrate that the suggested explanation of boat movements could possibly have a parallel on the OML. I considered it unlikely as did others and sadly we were shown to be correct in our surmising following the discovery of the breach. Glad to see the work is progressing at pace. Be interesting to see the extent of the damage and how long it will take to repair.
  25. I'll never let go Jack...oh Bye Jack....
