  1. Sounds like you are going to have a great future as a boat kitchen fitter/refitter!
  2. I'm in the market for new worktop for my house. Do you have any recommendations for decent laminate? Thanks
  3. The first boat didn't have enough gas (for some) and the second might use too much! Sounds like you need to find your goldilocks boat that is just right. My old boat also had a 150 gallon tank and that would last 2 of us between 2 and 3 weeks, but then I never used the onboard washing machine.
  4. Sunk boat on L&L https://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/concern-from-residents-as-barge-sinks-in-the-leeds-and-liverpool-canal-in-burnley-4393865
  5. You are very lucky OP - snap it up asap! When we sold our boat and gave up our leisure mooring in Newark on Trent the marina said there was a waiting list of over 30 for leisure and over 40 for residential moorings.
  6. Really pleased you have taken on board the expert advice you've been given. So many times people ask questions and then get all pantsy when they don't get the answer they want. They've already made up their mind and just want confirmation. You are now that bit better informed and I'm sure your ideal boat will be just round the corner. Best of luck.
  7. Really interested to read your response. I know absolutely nothing about this but my husband is a steel boat design engineer (of naval vessels) and that aligns with his view.
  8. Finally managed to walk along the Fossdyke today, or should I say 'wade' as a section of the towpath is still under water. Sadly one of the larger wooden liveaboard boats has sunk so someone has presumably lost their home. Quite surprised to see some of the more 'earthy' boats still afloat.
  9. Its only the ground floor that is flooded - all of the serving and cooking facilities are a floor higher so I would hope that it is pretty safe. I expect the Witham and Fossdyke are as filthy and contaminated as all the other waterways in the UK 😒
  10. Terrific photo isn't it! I was really impressed to see that one of the new burger restaurants on the Brayford was still open for business despite the ground floor being completely flooded.
  11. This is the Brayford now and the Witham under High Bridge (aka the Glory Hole) The flow on both the Fossdyke and Witham is extremely fast but boats are generally looking safely moored. Didn't stroll down as far as Stamp Lock. I expect this is going to take a while to subside. Haven't heard how my old marina on the Trent at Newark is doing. This is where the Witham leaves the Brayford Pool - not seen it this high or fast in the last 5 years.
  12. Sounds like it should be! How very brave of you both and I expect the owners are still singing your praises.
  13. Very grateful I live slightly uphill from the Brayford! Will take a walk to check current levels.
  14. We had exactly the same as Haggis and Howard described - we were asked what handling experience we had (my husband had loads). We started with Towergate insurance then switched to Craftinsure from year 2 onwards. If only one of you has done most of the steering when hiring then the other might find the Helmsman course gives them a bit of confidence. I'm going to be honest and say it took me a good long time to feel completely comfortable steering our boat.
  15. My brother lives in Loxley, Sheffield and the road near his house has waves on it! https://fb.watch/nOu6GkubSG/
  16. You probably shouldn't call them (GRP boats) yoghurt pots either.
  17. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  18. When we bought (and recently sold) our boat we used the same format as ABNB, who our vendor had bought through. A very simple one-side form. Pm me if you want.
  19. Looks a nice boat with a good builder and fitter. Always worth looking at as much as possible in your price range. Out of interest, did you view the first 2 boats you mentioned? Would be keen to hear what you thought of them.
  20. Drilling and tapping sounds like a good solution and would be very doable. A great reason for Jo to invest in a decent cordless drill and tap set. Much cheaper than replacing the burners/stove and generally a useful tool for DIY on a boat. Be handy if you decide to tackle some of the galley refit yourself. Good luck.

  22. Both gorgeous. If it was me I would go for the Aqualine as it is virtually new and will still be a newish, quality boat if you sell it on in 10 years (don't delay as it will sell quickly). We just sold our Polish-built boat and the surveyor remarked on its welding and steel quality. Very exciting for you and I wish you many happy years on the cut.
  23. I really don't agree with you. Welding in steel sheet to replace large bus windows would, I expect, involve considerable stripping out of the interior in the window area to prevent heat damage to panels, insulation etc. This would not be a straightforward job that could be undertaken during a typical repaint as far as I am aware. Not an issue with a shell but very tricky with a fitted boat. I think the Kedian insert panels would be straightforward to fit and would look amazing when painted.
  24. Yesterday we handed over our beautiful boat to her new owners. A very sad day as I am not ready to accept that I am no longer a boater. Regretfully, busy jobs and increasingly frail, unwell and dependent parents meant that we were not going to be able to get away on the boat much (or for long periods as we have been), and we could not justify hanging on to such an expensive luxury if we weren't going to be able to make use of it. It is not an exaggeration to say that I have had the happiest times of my life on the boat and it has renewed my love and appreciation for the UK. I know the network is not perfect, and is in need of quite a bit of TLC, but I have enjoyed every single day of my boating life - have seen the most extraordinarily beautiful scenery and made some wonderful friends. Boating has enriched my soul like nothing else ever could and I am so grateful that I had the chance to experience it. Last month I celebrated the 10th anniversary of my bowel cancer diagnosis and I hope the next decade will see me back in my true home on the water. Hubby is giving the new owners a day of cruising/helming training today and if you see NB Aventine out and about with her new owners please make them feel welcome. I just wanted to say a big thank you to all on here for everything I have learnt about boats and boating.
