  1. Having a similar problem..and thought about it a lot..the only suggestion I can add is is to put a hole to the outside level with the waterline so the bottome of the locker is filled with water and there is a vent going to above the water line....or put a false bottom in and use a smaller gas cylinder
  2. I'm on sorting a gas locker at the back of my boat . The bottom of the locker is just above water level but when the boat is moving it will be below the water level. I'm going to put a vent hole at the bottom side of the locker .....any suggestions what size it needs to be?
  3. My tiller used to shake a lot...someone suggested lifting it slightly so I put a split block of wood, about 3/4" thick held in place with a large jubilee clip and it solved the problem

  6. They spray cars, motorbikes and trucks..don't see many vehicles painted with brush or roller Depends what you want...if you want a 'custom paint' type finish ...then spray......
  7. So...I'm walking or jogging along a towpath ...walking is not too bad...you don't mind stopping but when you're jogging, you get a bit 'annoyed' at having to stop when you approach each dog. You have to stop to assertain whether the dog is friendly, trained etc. From experience I stop as in the past I've had dogs trying to bite me when I'm running. Maybe I should adopt my friends attitude which is when running, if a dog comes running towards him, he kicks it...he doesn't wait to find out if it's been trained and won't attack him. What amazes me is the attitude of dog owners whose dog has come charging towards me and is trying to jump on me/bark at me...when I tell them to get their dog under control, they have a go at me ....sort of makes me want to adopt my friends attitude....Of course I shouldn't be using the towpath...certainly not for jogging along.....and then there's the dog shit...!!!
  8. Our boat curtains are held in place , at the bottom, by curtain wire...but what do you call those (usually metal) bars that can hold curtains in place?....and where can I get some?...Here's a link to a photo in another thread that explains what I'm talking about: Window bars
  9. In case we run out, I've had a jerry can full of diesel in my engine bay for several years ..Does diesel go off? If so , is there any way of telling whether it's usable or not?
  10. Thanks....that's something to work on when I'm bored
  11. I noticed that under my name/info when posting is a line : "Warn: (0%)" Just curious what this means
  12. I'm going to put a couple of blocks of wood to support a sheet of metal and then weld the metal at the edges....so there will be a gap between the metal sheet and the bottom of the boat (of about 3")...and then cut a 1" x 3" high vent hole
  13. OK...having considered all the possibilities, I'm going to put a false bottom as high up as poss, it will be about 1" above the waterline but when moving it will at times go under the waterlevel...so it will get wet in there . I'll set it so there's a slight angle so any water will drain out ....I'll make sure the drain hole is level with the new bottom...
  14. I was thinking of filling the bottom of the locker with water.....not cutting a hole for the water from the canal to get in...which then gives me the option of emptying the water out when I want to repaint it...I can't see anything which says I can't do this...
  15. Couldn't I just fill the bottom of the locker with water?
  16. I have a gas locker where the vent is half way down the locker.Reading the BSS I can either put a vent at the bottom of the locker or fill the part of the locker beneath the vent with 'LPG resistant materials'.......Does anyone know what this means...what are 'LPG resistant materials' and is doing this practical with a gap of about 1' ?
  17. yes ...that's me....didn't know apple did a 12v charger..thanks for that ...I'll get one tomorow
  18. I'v a small invertor on my boat...a Nikkai 13.8v DC-230v 150 Watt which I use to keep my electric toothbrush and phone charged. Does anyone know whether using this to try and charge my ipad is likely to damage it?
  19. Where I moor I occasionally come across 'inconsiderate' fishermen...you know the sort...throwing bait onto the boat ...last week a loud bang caused me to step out of the boat and tangled in the front cratch cover was a lead weight, hook and line....thrown from about 50 metres away.....the guy apologised but his mate started telling him he should just carry on trying to get it as close to the boat as possible. Now what would happen if I went and started throwing things at their car?....Would I get the same reaction as they expect from me? I had thought of putting a fishing rod with a piece of string dangling into the water but was told that you need a licence if you use a rod....it doesn't matter that there's no hook on it...just having a rod near water means you have to get a licence
  20. My batteries are in a steel box....but the BSS examiner did suggest sitting the batteries on top of a plastic base in case any acid spilt....but I can't figure out how to get a plastic base to fit under two batteries....I've investigated the lids of plastic boxes but none seem to fit...any suggestions?
  21. Enjoyed reading this thread.....just wondered if anyone contacted the gentleman (can't remember how to spell 'Vaughn' ) and whether they found out his side of the story and whether they'd repeat it here....or do I have to email him?
  22. Thanks for the replies...Ian (or Lesley) what you suggest sounds as though it should work and allows me to take my time with painting the the undercoats and base coats .......I can see some problems but it still sounds a better method than the one i'm using
  23. I use red scotch , painting outdoors and I've been using Dulux or International gloss. I'm not after a perfect finish ...to do that I realise I'd have to spend a long time sanding and filling to get the surfaces smooth to begin with ...and then to get a good end product I'd need to work undercover...and ideally spray with 2-pack....I'd just like to get a reasonable finish where I don't have to touch up bleeds and paint pulls.
  24. I paint my own boat...usually every 2 years ....I sand, then undercoat the white 1" stripe then top coat it with Dulux or International gloss....leave it a few days then cover it with low tack masking tape before undercoating and topcoating the areas either side of the stripe.....but I always have problems with the low tack masking tape pulling at least some of the white off and then I end up doing a bodge touch up on the white. Also is there a maximum time you can leave the tape on for...I try to undercoat and topcoat in a day and although I'd like to put 2 topcoats on, I'm not happy leaving the tape on overnight. Has anyone any advice or does anyone know of a link to an article that might be able to get me over this problem
  25. Just ben back to the boat....and as I hoped, the weeping has ceased....so it'll be OK for another 18 years!!
