  1. Actually she asked if I was taking the piss??
  2. Rather than interrupt another thread in which Bruceinsanity kindly informed us: "There are foot patrols carrying handheld devices holding the licence database, checking for unlicensed and overstaying boats. CRT claim that every length is visited at least once per fortnight. In addition, there’s a licence checker page on the CRT website where you can dob in any boat you see without a licence displayed." I suddenly realised that I have my plastic reg number wedged inside a couple of portholes I haven't printed out the paper licence and' as we only have portholes I really don't want to block the view in or out (apart from the one with my nice shiny compost toilet of course). As there are chaps and chapessis with their handheld devices do we still need to bother sticking copies up either side still ?
  3. My wife was over the moon when I bought her a https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XCDRXH3/ref=asc_df_B06XCDRXH355017552/?tag=googshopuk-21&creative=22146&creativeASIN=B06XCDRXH3&linkCode=df0&hvadid=217951975137&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=18368164846711422390&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007418&hvtargid=pla-357667803049
  4. In the CRT statement they make it clear that the mistake lies with a 'subcontractor' therefor surely said 'subbi' is at fault and liable?
  5. Nooooo, we run out of water the moment the sun comes out as it is ?
  6. I totally agree with you. However boats on the Great Ouse, Cam etc still have sea-toilets with no holding tanks & at sea of course anything goes. Have you ever followed a cruise-liner?. In some ports and of course in marinas discharge overboard is discouraged. I guess you know that many 'yotties' are also starting to use water-less toilet systems as, on many existing yachts there is no room for a dirty fluid tank. It's hard enough carrying fresh water for an extended journey. In the USA there are quite a few companies promoting 'Compost' toilets.
  7. They don't have to be plumbed directly to exit into the sea - infact, if they do its a BSS failure Depends what system you're on
  8. A sea toilet I'ts sad that you expect the worst in everyone. I've grown up with boats and around 'boat-type' people both here and abroad and yes , at sea ,everything gets chucked into the ocean but I like to think that we, as humans are starting to see the error of our ways and that if everyone just makes a bit of effort we can start to lead by example and clean up our act. People have been pissing in the hedges and emptying cassettes into the cut long before the hysteria around composting toilets. I believe that even if some people do bag and bin their waste that will help relieve the pressure on some elsan points and believe me if you have seen some of the totally disgusting state some of the overused, over busy, blocked points in and around London you would have to agree that anything is better than morons tipping their waste onto an obviously blocked disposal point. You may not like the idea of composting your waste but there are people out there who think differently, it doesn't mean they are wrong any more than it means you are wrong. As boaters on the cut we should applaud anyone trying to make things better just as we should chastise those who do the opposite but be honest most men at least think nothing of a quick pee in the hedge (privacy permitting) on the way back from the pub rather than fill whatever tank we have on board.
  9. E. "Composting" toilets encourage to just chuck pee in the cut in most cases. This is not good for the canal or the fishes Where does it say that ? FFS I'm not saying anything against anyones choice of disposal. In fact I have a boat with a sea-toilet fitted you open the sea cock and flush it straight-out into the sea or river in my case. Composting systems may not be for you but no-one is saying to empty cassettes full of piss into the cut.
  10. Oh sorry sir. It all depends how many actual toilet buckets are in use, some toilets have a handle on the outside that mixes the contents, these are emptied into another bucket. I should have mentioned that you can get bio-degradable liners for the buckets that makes emptying easier. That system does not really help with composting though as, if you know about composting you don't really want the 'bin' to be too clean as you'll lose the helpful bacteria. We have 3 buckets so just rotate them around. If you really want to find out more there's loads of info on the web. I really don't understand why people who obviously love the canals are so anti anyone who actively want to avoid nasty chemicals and conserve water.
  11. Believe it or not there are some areas around here where there's no mobile and no broadband, or, when there is it rely's on 3 miles of very exposed telephone line, that's why we moved to 'Town'
  12. The term 'More money than sense' comes to mind ',we looked at one, custom built for the owner with a view to CC. As soon as one got aboard it was blindingly obvious that unless they had 'staff' following along in a butty to do the necessary working of locks, mooring pins, plank and storage it was only good for short holidays. they had 3 tv's on board each of them bigger than the one we have in the house.. The Kitchen ( I still call that area the Galley ) was fully equipped, every gadget including a double oven ( FFS ) but no work-top to speak of. 2 HUGE easy chairs in front of a Morso but with no-where to store any fuel. The asking price exceeded £120000! when we saw the vendor I realised that the most likely reason for the 'change of plan' was probably their designer had made no allowance for the couples size, They had trouble passing down the corridor by the guest bedroom . They blamed the builder ?
  13. Please everyone, if you are rally interested in composting toilets do take some time and read-up on the various systems. LadyG this is the first time I have heard of bins placed on the tow-path. I thought the only thing we should place on the tow-path were our mooring pins. Mind you a bucketfull of shit may deter speeding cyclists ? If you read the Environment Agency notes it's classed as 'Domestic Sludge' and bagging and binning is, in fact, their instruction.
  14. Double bagging and putting it in the general rubbish IS NOT Composting. The point of a COMPOSTING WATERLESS SYSTEM is to COMPOST. As has already been mentioned, some people dump their piss in the canal and put their waste in the bin. I would suggest to them that they change their ways and adopt a proper waterless, chemical free COMPOSTING TOILET Regime
  15. Just because you & others do not see it's possible to do things properly without resorting to lazy illegal shortcuts is not a reason to disparage those who try and care for the environment and tread lightly on the earth.
  16. I thought even the luddites on here would see the advantage of number one conserving water and number two using no harmful chemicals simple really Pun intended ?
  17. It may be better to refer to composting toilet systems as water-less toilets. Essentially the faecal matter is kept dry, urine does not get mixed in with the poo. This usually is managed by a separator that diverts the piss into a soak-away or, in the case of boats or vans a pee container that is disposed of as you do with cassettes. I order for the separator to work it means that both male and female( + any gender fluid) need to relieve themselves sitting down. The fan (if used) is to assist the drying process & not to remove smells as, somewhat surprisingly there isn't any of note. Poo is covered by a small amount of sawdust, cat litter, coir etc sometime perfumed with essential oils. Toilet paper use is kept to a minimum, washing is encouraged instead. Defiantly NO wet-wipes. The poo container sometimes has a stirrer built in, or the contents can get mixed by a 'shit-stick' to encourage the composting process. Once the bucket is deemed full it is either emptied into another bucket with air holes around the base and left to carry on composting. The container must be kept dry although some moisture is required often supplied by a hand sprayer. The bucket is a reference to the approx amount of small containers required by a couple of people over the year , 1 in use, I composting and 1 ready to be mixed with general use compost, soil etc and ready for your Tomato plants ? This is-just a simplistic explanation, there are many variations, some use fungus, add worms, mix in general green waste etc. It's quite an eye-opener how little 'brown-waste' is generated by a couple over the year once the liquid is removed. It is bloody ridiculous that we, in this country spend a fortune cleaning water, adding chemicals bringing it up to to a drinking standard then flush our waste away with the same water, madness.
  18. I'm pretty certain that I'll be using it next year. I'll document the work as it goes along for future reference.
  19. Mine were running wild shitting in the woods at 2, but there again we live in vegan West Wales ?
  20. That is something I can't really help you with, it's the reason I ended up with the name Clodi ( in full Clodi Oldgit Richards) the 'oldgit' seems to be a hangover from when my kids used to take great delight killing me on the Playstation I had the name 'lostoldgit', my real name is Clive but when you join Facebook you have to set your profile and thats how I became Clodi. I have no idea what my password is I rely on google to remember it ?
  21. I think you just join the group, that's what I did, it's worth it as there is loads of info. Mind you as with all things 'Facebook' there's a fair amount of bollocks but there is a lot of sensible information as well and pointers to where to get info from the EA and planning etc. https://www.eco-loo.co.uk/ another site, I don't personally know this company. Also you may hear about incinerating toilets. They are not composting toilets and require a lot of energy gas/electric so don't really tick any green credentials either
  22. If anyone is interested in talking shit, head over to the Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/compostingloos/?ref=group_header there's loads of info in the files
  23. Thanks Jen, your advice regarding link pipes are very true. I guess I'm not really used to only having one engine and one tank. I shall definitely not now link the tank
  24. Great site, thank you. I've been told by a boatyard that plastic tanks are better than steel as they don't suffer from condensation. I haven't researched that claim yet though.
  25. I am considering fitting an extra diesel tank primarily for the Central-heating. I would like to interconnect to the main fuel tank and be filled via the existing tank. I've always used Tek-Tanks or Cak-tanks in the past but I don't know the BSS regs concerning installation on narrow-boats, Has anyone fitted an extra tank recently and are there any pitfalls lurking? I seem to recall there was a problem with glass-bowel fuel filters and plastic fuel pipes and Ebers? Forgive the grammar I'm using Suzuki voice txt
